"Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" Trailer & "The Multiverse Saga" Timeline

by Nathaniel R

Queen Bassett contemplates the future of Wakanda (as we contemplate the future of the MCU)

We try not to care about the MCU because it's become so dominant as to be oppressive on movie culture BUT we did grow up reading Marvel comic books so it's hard to look away. Phase Four of Marvel's Cinematic Universe has brought (comparatively) mixed reactions with people griping that the work is getting sloppier, particularly vfx and action-wise, in their rush to have literally dozens of subfranchises under the overall MCU umbrella. We'd also argue that they're getting a bit lazier in character development, trusting that comics lore and general fan culture will sell everything rather than putting the personality onscreen where it needs to be.

We hope it improves soon and if it's going to, Wakanda Forever (trailer below just dropped) would be the ideal place to right the ship what with a strong proven director and cast (Ryan Coogler and several cast members returning), a beloved property, and one of Marvel's most intriguing characters (at least on the page) being introduced...

Review: Cherry

by Christopher James

Tom Holland ditches the superhero cape for a much grittier turn in the Russo Brothers' new film, "Cherry."Cherry is five movies in one, and each one of them is bad in a different, unique way.

Joe and Anthony Russo’s ambitious new film for Apple TV+ has many different goals. Unfortunately, much like a juggler with too many balls in the air, every one of those goals falls to the ground, landing with a thud. Despite clear ambition and clearly talented people involved, nothing comes together in Cherry. What we’re left with is a misshapen, overlong mess where our lead Forrest Gumps his way through a variety of genres and ripped-from-the-headlines issues...

Beauty vs Beast: Napalm Mornings

Jason from MNPP here with this week's "Beauty vs Beast" -- Francis Ford Coppola's film Apocalypse Now has been coming up in conversation a lot lately, and not just because my boyfriend kept accidentily getting the title of Gregg Araki's TV show Now Apocalypse backwards. The film is celebrating its 40th anniversary this Friday, and besides doing a screening and conversation about the film at the Tribeca Film Fest last week Coppola's putting out what he's calling a "Final Cut" in August, in theaters and on blu-ray. It falls somewhere between the original release and the 2001 Redux cut, apparently. But no matter the cut it's the tension between Captain Benjamin L. Willard (Martin Sheen) and Colonel Walter E. Kurtz (Marlon Brando) that remains the the backbone of the film, and that's what we're investigating today...

PREVIOUSLY Two weeks back most of us still hadn't seen Avengers Endgame, and now two billion dollars worth of us have. But all that money couldn't help Chris Pratt, who lost the contest against Thanos 70 to 30%. Suck it, Star-lord. Said Tom G:

"Just like Jennifer Lawrence ran circles around [Pratt] in Passengers, Brolin literally ran galaxies around him."

"Avengers: Endgame" Teases

by Nathaniel R

Avengers 4 (or 5 if you count Captain America: Civil War, which you probably should) finally has a title: Avengers Endgame. Yay, superhero movies are ending! (Just kidding in two ways. They're obviously not over and I like 'em even while I wish they weren't the dominant moviegoing culture.)

But anyway, you know what would be truly truly thrilling? If Marvel Studios and Disney were brave enough to not release ANY more footage from Avengers: Endgame beyond this teaser. Why waste all the money on advertising and spoil the visual reveals when everyone is already going to see the movie? Avengers: Infinity War grossed 2 billion worldwide making it the highest-grossing movie of 2018. There's no reason to believe that Endgame couldn't do the same even without the hardsell.

The teaser is after the jump...
