The Queer Palm goes to "La Fracture"

Catherine Corsini celebrates her Queer Palm win

The Queer Palm jury this year was led by actor Nicolas Maury (Call My Agent), and included Josza Anjembe, Vahram Murayan, Roxane Mesquida, and Aloïse Sauvage. They've given their prize to La Fracture / The Divide by Catherine Corsini (reviewed here) which is about a fifty-something lesbian couple (inspired by Corsini's own relationship) who are trying to survive a night in a chaotic hospital during a yellow vest protest. The film is also rumored to be a contender for a prize tonight when Spike Lee's jury hands out their awards in the main competition.

Cannes at Home: Day 11

Spike Lee's illustrious jury will hand out its prizes Saturday night. Friday was still full of screenings, however, including the last two premieres in the Main Competition. Justin Kurzel's Nitram has generated some controversy, purporting, as it does, to tell the story of the man responsible for the deadliest mass shooting in Australian history. To extend cinematic empathy, or even a gesture of exploitation, towards such a figure is bound to cause a polemic. The other film to screen on this last competitive day of Cannes 2021 was Joachim Lafosse's The Restless, the story of a Belgian family dealing with the struggles brought upon by bipolar disorder. To celebrate the event, we'll take a look at two previous tales of killers from these filmmakers. One is a mythic warrior, haunted by the carnage he commits. Cannes Wins: Tilda's pups win the Palm Dog. Plus Critics Week kudos.

Cannes at Home: Day 10

The 2021 Cannes Film Festival is on its last days, and almost all Competition titles have premiered. The latest were new films by Apichatpong Weerasethakul Bruno Dumont and Nabil Ayouch. The Thai director's Memoria has already been met with raves by fans, though, as ever, his work continues to be unfit for all tastes. Some audiences aren't into slow-cinema. Dumont's France, however, got full-on boos, while Ayouch's Casablanca Beats was deemed a possible contender for the Palme d'Or. We'll know the jury's choices on Saturday. For now, let's indulge in cinematic reminiscence as we look back at these artist's previous triumphs. They include a poetic reverie complete with an interspecies sex scene, a funny serial killer movie, and a film that drove irate people to attack its cast…

Cannes Diary #09: Some unexpected fireworks in Cannes

July, 14th: Bastille Day! Let me be honest with you, I totally forgot the holiday was today (time becomes an endless flow/blur during Festivals) but in the morning every hotel, resturant and administrative building was covered by a lot (a lot) of French flags. Happy to report that inbetween two screenings, I was able to see the magnificent fireworks exhibition on the sea with a spectacular view from the press room.

Even happier to report that there were fireworks in the Competition screenings, too...
