27th annual Critics Choice TV nominations

The Critics Choice Association used to be two separate associations, one honoring film and one honoring TV and they merged once they decided to have their show together.  Nevertheless the voting is separate and the TV wing of the association announces their nominations first. (Those of us on the film side, don't start voting until tomorrow.) The new third season of Succession led the nominations with 8 while Mare of Easttown and Evil are in second place with five each.

FYC Critics Choice Young Performers Awards

Each year the Critics Choice votes on a category that doesn't get a lot of press or campaigning: Best Young Actor/Actress. Without constant discussion (as with other acting categories) I've noticed critics default to whatever movie is popular that happens to have a major role for a child. Which is why, say, Belfast's Jude Hill could easily be in contention. But, generally speaking, there are better performances out there than whichever one happens to be most visible in this particular category in any given year. (Same goes for famous adult movie stars in the regular categories, come to think of it). So each year we try to help by listing eligible performers in this "Young Performer" category which requires a bit of research since the actors often aren't famous (yet) and the attention is usually directed at their adult co-stars...

Critics Choice Winners

The all virtual Critic's Choice Awards were held tonight. Eternally handsome Taye Diggs hosted direct to camera, which must have been one of the easiest gigs ever. No audience to play to, no flop sweat if jokes failed as thy often do for awards show hosts. Just an obedient laugh track (meant to be ironic or...?) and the camera. 

The Critics Choice voters often agreed with the Golden Globes including Best Picture for Nomadland which led the awards with 4 wins. But they went their own way in Best Comedy where Palm Springs took the prize. Sorry Borat but all was not lost because Best Supporting Actress went to  Maria Bakalova. "Mank" leads the Critics Choice Nominations

Mank and Minari led the 26th annual Critics Choice nominations with 12 and 10 nods respectively. The ceremony this year will be held on March 7th on the CW with Taye Diggs hosting (and if you missed the TV nominations, those came out a couple of weeks ago). Since there are so many nominees in each category (it's getting ridiculous in lead acting!) we'll be mostly talking about who was left out. That's the takeaway in each category when you keep expanding the number...

Critics Choice TV Nominees Are Here

Right in the middle of seemingly thousands of critics’ prizes for film work, today we got the TV nominations for the Critics Choice Association, nearly three weeks ahead of their corresponding film lists. It’s the first major mid-year opportunity to see what television may still be in the conversation from the Emmys and what new series have been strongly received. There’s plenty to say about this list that isn’t entirely consistent, nominating certain performers from some shows while questionably ignoring their costars. It’s also worth noting that not a single one of the comedy or drama winners from last year were eligible this time around, though that’s just as much about series that ended (Fleabag, Watchmen) as shows that have yet to premiere their latest seasons (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Succession).

For the second year in a row, Schitt’s Creek is nominated in all five eligible categories, and it’s joined this time around by three drama series in pulling off that same feat – nominations leaders The Crown and Ozark (each with six total bids due to a second cited performer in one of the categories) and new series Lovecraft Country. The best residual breakthrough from the Emmys appears to be What We Do in the Shadows, which scored four acting bids, for all except my favorite series regular, Kayvan Novak. I’m particularly pleased that a slew of actors who missed out on Emmy nods, like Josh O’Connor, Tobias Menzies, Bob Odenkirk, Tom Pelphrey, Janet McTeer, Nicholas Hoult, and most importantly, Daisy Edgar-Jones, did manage to score here.
