Emmy Category Review: Outstanding Drama Series

Last year, Succession was pretty far out front, and it feels like this year’s juggernaut, The Crown, has just as easy a path to victory. But this category does include a varied slate, welcoming back two past nominees, two freshman series, one sophomore show, and a handful of extremely high nominations totals. It’s worth looking a bit more closely at each of the top-tier nominees, many of which we’ve covered extensively in our category-by-category analysis.

Emmy Category Analysis: Is a 'Ted Lasso' Win Inevitable?

Of the eight Comedy Series nominees, this is the first nomination in this category for six shows.By: Christopher James

Is it really all sewn up for Ted Lasso? The charming comedy about an American football coach recruited to coach “football” (aka soccer) in the U.K. broke the record for most nominations by a freshman series. In total, it earned an astounding 20 nominations, including Series, Actor, two Supporting Actress slots, four Supporting Actor slots, three Directing slots and two Writing slots. Can anyone stop the eternally optimistic Ted Lasso?

There are seven other series that are hoping to put up a good fight. Realistically though, only two freshmen series pose an actual challenge (and no, I’m not referring to Emily in Paris). Emmy Winner Predictions: Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series

Now this is one hell of a category, and it may actually be THE most competitive race of Emmy night. Unlike drama and comedy series, where The Crown and Ted Lasso have distinct advantages and are all but guaranteed to triumph (check out our breakdowns of those categories for more), this one is completely open and up in the air. It’s one of the few categories where I correctly predicted all five nominees, though they didn’t end up with the same hauls I expected. No category is as stacked as Outstanding Lead Actress In A Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie. From top to bottom, each of the women nominated in the category give awards-worthy performances in projects as different as prestige dramas, gritty rape stories, biopics and Marvel comedies. Last week, we lamented that the corresponding Lead Actor race lacked variety and a clear frontrunner. The story could not be more different in Lead Actress. Though we do have a frontrunner, each person poses some level of threat that makes this an exciting category to watch.

In a surprise, Dolly Parton's Christmas on the Square was announced the winner of Outstanding TV Movie at last night's Primetime Creative Arts Emmys, securing Netflix another win in this category after missing last year. While this category has gone low-profile in recent years (being “demoted” from the main ceremony to the Creative Arts), the work represented in this category is still worth recognizing and worth checking out.
