Drama Desk Nominees + Dorian Awards expand to honor theater

by Nathaniel R

"Shucked" is a hit and leads the Drama Desk Nominations

Are there too many awards groups? We've often bemoaned the ever expanding roster. But, in a stunning feat of hypocrisy I'm personally excited to announce that I'm part of a new group. Or, rather, an already established group expanding to cover something else! So, two things to report. First the Drama Desk Awards (which honor Broadway and Off Broadway productions) and then a new theatrical wing of GALECA: The Society for LGTBQ Entertainment Critics. Several members of Team Experience are part of GALECA but the Dorian Theater Awards are a small subsection of that large group of national critics. In the inaugural year I am excited to be among its 31 charter members. We have covered Broadway (and random theatrical events) on and off over the years here at TFE but we've always wanted to make that a weekly happening so now hopefully we can make that happen.

But first the Drama Desk Nominations...

"Dorian Award" Nominations - here's what LGBTQ critics loved this year

by Nathaniel R

The 14th annual Dorian Film Award winners will be announced on February 23rd. The Dorian Film Awards comes from the Society of LBGTQ Critics (also known as GALECA, an earlier acronym) to which a few of us here at The Film Experience belong. But we're just a tiny drop in the bucket; The society has grown tremendously and now represents over 400 critics/journalists. Everything Everywhere All At Once led the nominations with 9 with TÁR as runner up with 7 nominations.

Full list of nominees and a few comments follow (NOW UPDATED WITH WINNERS 2/23) ...

Dorian Awards TV Nods: Lots of love for "Hacks", "Heartstopper", and "Somebody Somewhere"

by Nathaniel R

How fab was that lesbian cruise episode of "Hacks"?

Shortly on the heels of the annual TCA nominations as Emmy voters are a-voting, come the 14th annual Dorian Awards TV honors. These nominations come from the The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics, also referred to as GALECA which was the acronym for an earlier name (the name changes are very confusing especially since the signature prize, "The Dorian Awards" doesn't match either of them!). The organization is made up of 385 queer professional critics and journalists covering film and television. A few of those 385 write stuff right here at The Film Experience.

HBO led the nominations with three shows, two comedies (Somebody Somewhere and Hacks) and one drama (Euphoria)...

Dorian Awards doubles up on its winners and 'Flee' takes four prizes

by Nathaniel R

The Society for LGBTQ Entertainment Journalists (a few of us at Team Experience are members) have voted. The society has chosen the following films, marked with a ★ as the best of 2021. Unfortunately, there was a LOT of doubling up on prizes rather than spreading the wealth: Ariana deBose, Jane Campion, and Pedro Almodóvar each won two awards and Flee won four times. Argh. You know how your host here feels about spreading the wealth. Anyway, can you feel the season wrapping up? Voting is underway and the last burst of awardage is over the next few days with the Oscars on the 27th. The winners are after the jump...

"Minari" leads the Dorian Award nominees but LGBT films underperform

by Nathaniel R

The Society for LGBTQ Entertainment Critics, to which I and a few of our writers here belong, have revealed their nominations for the film year with Ammonite, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, I Carry You With Me, Supernova, and Uncle Frank up for best LGBTQ Film though only one of them (Ma Rainey) secured any other nominations. Minari leads with the overall nominations with six and Nomadland is just behind with five.

You can see all the nominations after the jump...
