Emmy Review: Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie

By Juan Carlos Ojano

Herewith a strange category in that all of the nominees have considerable hurdles to overcome to win this Emmy. As it stands, this group is an eclectic mixture of the young (Mescal, Pope), the old (Irons), and the superheroes in between (Jackman, Ruffalo). Do note that this category as well as Best Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie do not have episode submissions. Instead, the performance from the entire series will be considered...

Hollywood: "Hooray for Hollywood Part 2" and... nope, I can't do this.

by Nathaniel R

Holland Taylor is always a joy to watch. She's a studio exec with a special gift for spotting future stars.

ICYMI the kick off Eric Blume started our look at Ryan Murphy's Netflix limited series "Hollywood" breaking down the first episode by the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly... because plot has never been a Murphy strength but surfaces are obviously the primary concern in la la Land... or, excuse me, "Dreamland" a secret word to unlock (literal) pleasure in this particular show.

by Eric Blume

Our hero, the dreamer, hoping to be picked

We’ll be covering the latest Ryan Murphy show Hollywood for you, now streaming on Netflix. Instead of a retread of the plot each episode (because, who cares?) we thought we’d treat you to a succinct look at the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of it all each week.  And, because the show features a lot of beautiful eye candy, include the 'Not So Ugly' as a digestif.  Let’s take a look at Episode One…

Theater World Awards: Jeremy Pope, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Paddy Considine

Tis the season of theater awards. We've already covered the Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Drama League, and Tony nominations. Now it's time for the Theater World Awards. Unlike the other theater prizes the Theater World Awards don't have nominations, just winners. Their purpose is honoring performers who made either Broadway or Off-Broadway debuts or delivered breakout performances during the theatrical season. Most of the names are new to us but you'll recognize a couple of stars from film and television among the possible future theater legends.

The thirteen performers who will be honored at their event are after the jump...

Chita Rivera Awards, Cher, and Film Choreography.

by Nathaniel R

Isnt It Romantic?

Did you know that Oscar once had a category for dance? Well, "Dance Direction" to be particular. Which is not quite choreography but close. The category was held for three years and discontinued after the 1937 Academy Awards. Despite the first three to four decades of Oscar ceremonies arriving in a time when movie musicals were plentiful, the Academy Awards never instituted a choreography category. The sole example, apart from Dance Direction was a special Oscar for Jerome Robbins for West Side Story (1961), a redundant trophy in a way since he also shared the Best Director Oscar win due to his choreography and dance direction on that immortal classic (currently being remade).

At any rate, the Chita Rivera Awards, which sprung back to life three years ago (they were once called the Fred and Adele Astaire Awards)  DO give awards to movies for their dance sequences in two separate categories, in addition to their primary focus which is honoring Broadway and Off Broadway achievements...
