Some tweets we enjoyed too much recently not to share!
my favorite superficial thing about '80s cinema is how the men's bodies look, unpolished & hairy & fucking human. between @marcmaron & @VictorQuinaz, GLOW is giving me "Ron Leibman in NORMA RAE" realness & i love itttttttttt
13 Going On 30, but it's about a gay teen wishing he was a Broadway diva and wakes up in Patti LuPone's body in 1980 and has to perform Evita 8 times a week on Broadway. It's a horror film.
Sadly Marvel didn’t take my suggestion of a 30 min sequence in #AntManAndWasp where everyone shrinks down slightly smaller than Michelle Pfeiffer and bows their heads, refusing to look her in the eye because they’re not worthy.
After the jump the poor man's Johnny Depp, Mamma Mia Fallen Kingdom, Disney Princesses, actress kerfuffles, and a bit of politics because who can avoid it now...File the next two tweets under 'You learn new things every day!'...
Chris here. While the first looks at the Mamma Mia! sequel has been a swingingpendulum of results, fans sincere and ironic still eagerly await word on just what ABBA songs will make their way into the film. But yay, we just got our first released track: a Lily James-led rendition of "When I Kissed the Teacher". And naturally it's a gay old time: feather boas, costume reveals, and a Celie Imrie cameo. Mostly, this has us really stoked for James' polished vocals and perhaps some higher production value this go around.
Even though this song isn't quite at the top of my must list for this ABBA redux (gimme "People Need Love" in addition to Cher's incoming "Fernando"), it's quite a treat. What ABBA tracks are you hoping make the mix?
Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again has a new eye sore poster. Every single cast member has been photographed separately and then composited together like some Ensemble Frankenstein Monster. The poor beast is then tasked with imitating pure joy before it has learned to control its facial muscles.
It's easy to imagine some photoshop artist creating their own mini-narratives to keep them interested while hunched over their computer jamming all the stars together. Do I spot a romantic comedy between Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgård whose eyelines are matching up?
Why does this type of poster keeps happening? Why aren't poster images and promotional photoshoots done on sets on the days when busy actors are already all assembled together? If you want to see the full poster just click on Cher's sassiness to your left. I didn't want to sully up the front page.
Oh and go ahead and tag yourself in the comments. I am Lily James' left foot that's eager to jump into the water.
• The Undefeated an amazing longread about the careers of several non-household name black actors from 1990s television series • Coming Soon Ansel Elgort in talks to play fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen in an original screen musical composed by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked). The huge success of La La Land and Greatest Showman is already taking effect which is nice because we were worried it wouldn't. • /Film Kristen Wiig in talks to play the villain Cheetah in Wonder Woman 2. Looooove this idea
• MNPP Armie Hammer getting his chest waxed. Nooooo • The Guardian Casting for Quentin Tarantino's Charles Manson movie has begun. Stage (Pssst. Tony Season is almost upon us) • W Magazine Lee Pace sorta comes out... in that tortured 'I won't say it, but I'm saying it' Jodie Foster kinda way in this interview about taking on the Joe Pitt role in the revival of Angels in America • Theater Mania Harry Connick Jr is now in rehearsals for the debut of a new musical based on Best Picture winner The Sting. It's going to premiere at New Jersey's Papermill Playhouse (which is a great place to see shows) • Show-Score A list of all the current NYC stage shows offering lottery tickets (i.e. cheap seats for lucky winners) not that I want to give myself competition as I'm already losing Angels in America and Frozen daily. But these lotteries do actually send people to shows every single day who couldn't afford it otherwise. I only ever enter sporadically (if I remember / am dying to see a show / friends visiting NYC etc) and I've won thrice over the years and seen West Side Story, Wicked, and Kinky Boots quite cheaply. Though I suspect it's harder to win now that all the lotteries are online instead of in person (i.e. less commitment to enter so way more competition).
