MTV Movie Awards ~ The Live Blog of Indifference

9:00 Black Swan and 127 Hours and Kings Speech jokes. oh my. My television is a time machine. Or MTV is. Jason Sudeikis made a joke about the set being Lady Gaga's bedroom. But I think... no... this is more like how I imagine Spider-Man Turn off the Dark set to look like.

Eva Mendes has been Teem Edward the whole time.

9:12 They've already told four Team Jacob / Team Edward jokes? That's like one every 3 minutes.

"My heart says Jacob. But my weiner says Edward. My balls are indifferent."

I'm scared to ask but...

9:13 Best Male Performance goes to Robert Pattinson who doesn't even do a good job of acting "indifferently cool / bemused". Jesse Eisenberg could act that while acting 7 other emotions simultaneously with an undercurrent of self loathing. These awards are always stupid.

9:27 Three people we like at once on MTV. It's kind of a rare occurence!

Crazy Stupid Indifference To This Awards ShowSteve Carell made a joke about horny dolphins. Emma and Ryan are both so naturally funny that

A Quickie With The "Four Whores of the Apocalypse"

You have to have noticed by our hastily slathered wallpaper that we've entered MOULIN ROUGE! WEEK. Baz Luhrmann's "Spectacular! Spectacular!" went into wide release ten years ago tomorrow! (Tomorrow night we'll have a "hit me with your best shot" episode celebrating the movie and at least a couple of other posts, this week, too.)

So to get us in the mood...

"Harold Zidler... and his infamous girls. They called them his Diamond Dogs.

Also known as "The Four Whores of the Apocalypse." Can you even choose a favorite?! Everyone should vote! Don't be a wussy bystander; risk it all on that chaotic dance floor.

And in related 10th anniversary polling. Remember "Lady Marmalade", their intro music?!

Who was it for you at the time: Mya, Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim and P¡nk? And is your answer the same today, ten years on?

DVDs. Which Will It Be?

Now that we've caught up with the last Reader Request (Beauty & The Beast) and we're finally done with 2010 movies (Jesus, that took forever!), it's time to really dig into 2011. The earliest releases of 2011 are already on DVD and the summer movie is in full swing. Here is a list of newish movies from either the past couple of weeks or today's DVD batch. It's time to bring back the Reader Request.

  • GNOMEO & JULIET -garden gnomes do Shakespeare in this animated film.
  • I AM NUMBER FOUR- alex pettyfer shoots stuff from his hands in sci-fi/romance.
  • THE MECHANIC - jason statham teaches ben foster how to kill people.
  • NO STRINGS ATTACHED - natalie portman and ashton kutcher are f***buddies.
  • THE OTHER WOMAN -natalie portman marries another woman's man.
  • THE RITE -studying exorcism with scary-eyed anthony hopkins.
  • THE ROOMMATE -leighton & minka rip off "single white female" in college thriller.

Which of those 2011 feature releases would you like Nathaniel to write-up about? Your vote is my command.

"at the ballet-ayyyyyyyyyy"I'll write up the winning choice for next Monday. UPDATE: HERE IS THE WRITE UP ON THE OTHER WOMAN.

There are two documentaries also hitting DVD that I've already written about, the orangutan in captivity meditation known as Nenette (brief thoughts) and the Broadway doc Every Little Step (review) which is worth seeing if you have any emotional investment in "A Chorus Line" or any intellectual curiousity about the casting process on big Broadway shows.

Best Posters of Best Pictures?

I visit the IMP Awards pretty often since it's such a great source for movie posters, and because they get posters from different markets, not just the typically lesser American ones.

At the moment they have voting open for you to choose the best movie posters from all 83 Oscar winners. I'm telling you about this because West Side Story (1961) is not in their top ten at this current voting tally and that is yo-yo, schoolboy... KRUP YOU, voters!* You'd think that this would be the one type of voting where the most recent movies wouldn't automatically win from familiarity because it's a visual marketing opinion, not a "which movie is your favorite?" question.

The famous poster conveys two things that you'd think wouldn't go together. It gives us the gritty edge of inner city stories and the transcendent power of the musical genre and it manages both in perfect harmony. It's just Reason #100,721,009 that Saul Bass was a buggin' ever lovin'* genius. I have the West Side Story poster framed on my wall right next to the All About My Mother poster as they're maybe my two favorite posters of all time.

Go vote... and tell us what you selected in the comments.
