DGA Winners: Chloe Zhao, Darius Marder, Melina Matsoukas, etc...

by Nathaniel R

Zhao on the set of Nomadland

As expected Chloe Zhao took the DGA prize last night  for Nomadland on her way to making history (hopefully) on Oscar night. She's only the second woman to win the DGA for Feature Film and she'd be the second to win the Oscar if she prevails later this month on Hollywood's High Holy Night. She reportedy praised her fellow nominees at the guild awards where her peers convene honoring David Fincher as "master class", Aaron Sorkin as  "a poet". And echoing the sentiment of many of us movie lovers in that Lee Isaach Chung's Minari touched her personally and she can't wait to see what Emerald Fennell does as a follow up to Promising Young Woman. Relatable words and classy, too...

On the SAG winners: History making but will they prove Oscar & Emmy influential?

by Nathaniel R

Riz Ahmed was one of handful of stars hat operated as inadvertent hosts by having bits of an interview spliced in all throughout the show about their careers and such.

We watched the SAG awards last night with a mix of fascination and relief. Fascination at the winners chosen and relief that the ceremony accepted that it couldn't be a normal one and therefore became merely a swift presentation of wins with acceptance speeches on Zoom. Aside from swift "bits" where famous actors talked about their headshots or the "special skills" on their resumes, it was all just actors talking about the nominated actors and then the winners beaming from their homes on Zoom. It ran just a single hour long...

A chaotic awards season continues with the ASC nominations. "Cherry" anyone?

by Nathaniel R

Cherry (2021) surprises with an ASC nomination.

This awards season continues to deliver one surprise after another. But almost all of those surprises have involved recency bias in one way or another. That's an odd problem to encounter this year, if you stop to think on it. Everyone has been locked up at home for an entire year, presumably watching their many screens that whole time with little else to do for entertainment. You'd think this past film year of all film years, guild and Oscar voters would have been watching more movies and not waiting around for their screeners like they usually do. Shouldn't we have had less recency bias problems this year rather than more?

Here are the nominees from the American Society of Cinematographers and some notes on the Oscar race as well...

DGA Nominees: Chung, Fennell, Fincher, Sorkin, and Zhao

by Nathaniel R

The Director's Guild of America have announced their nominations for the 2020 film year. And it's a doozy. For the first time ever two women have been nominated in the top category. It's worth noting that the DGA has nominated more women for their top prize over the years than Oscar has but they've never nominated two simultaneously in their top category.  The nominees and some comments and awards season stats are after the jump...
