CDG Award winners: 'Dune' and 'Cruella' to fight it out at the Oscars

by Nathaniel R

Andrew Garfield accepting his prize

The Costume Design Guild Awards were held last night. Teary Andrew Garfield received the Spotlight Award and said costume designers were his favourite to collaborate with. Producers Amy Pascal and Rachel O'Connor where honored as Distinguished Collaborators and Sharen Davis received the Career Achievement Award. The late Anthony Powell was also inducted into the CDG Hall of Fame by Glenn Close in a prerecorded segment. The Costume Designers Guild divvies their annual prizes up into Contemporary, Fantasy, and Period which means that three films get to share honors. This year they went for Coming 2 America, Dune, and Cruella... the latter two are also competing for the Oscar. Winners and comments after the jump...

ADG & ACE winners spread the wealth

by Nathaniel R

The Art Directors Guild and the American Cinema Editors Guild announced their winners last night. The results indicate support for multiple films vying for Best Picture with Encanto (not a Best Picture nominee) the only film to win at both ceremonies last night. King Richard made news winning the Drama Editing prize over presumedly stronger Best Picture hopefuls like Dune and Power of the Dog but who knows what Oscar might choose. Statistically, believe it or not, this win is not necessarily a big plus in King Richard's column (other than to be recognized which if of course wonderful on its own!). AMPAS has a differnet voting body and they often choose differently in the editing category.

Winners and commentary after the jump for both guilds after the jump...

BAFTA Nominations: 'Dune' has a huge lead while 'West Side Story' struggles

by Nathaniel R

Dune has a gargantuan lead at the annual BAFTA awards with 11 nominations. People often look to BAFTA for clues as to last minute shifts in the Oscar voting vibes... but we strongly caution against that now. BAFTA has changed so many of their rules in the past few years and added so many intricacies to their voting (including partially juried fields and 100% juried nominations in some categories) that it's difficult to say what any particular nomination actually means or who it came from.

Musicals had a rough morning. tick tick BOOM! went without any nominations at all (despite multiple longlistings) while West Side Story struggled. Despite five nominations (including Mike Faist, yay!) it missed in all sorts of crucial places. Nominations and comments are after the jump...

WGA Nominations -- But don't expect these lists when Oscar nominations are announced!

by Nathaniel R

The French Dispatch, a movie about writers is honored for its writing

The Writer Guild have announced their nominations for the 2021 film year. Unlike the DGA and the PGA, the WGA aren't abundantly prophetic when it comes to Oscar nominations since their rules are so different. But the nominees and some notes are after the jump...

ACE Eddie Awards split on musicals, embracing "tick tick... BOOM!" while shunning "West Side Story"

by Nathaniel R

a split decision on the big musicals of 2021

The American Cinema Editor's Guild is the second of four guilds to announce on this unofficial "Super Thursday" in which PGA, ACE, DGA, and WGA are all announcing... It's the last big precursor announcement before Oscar nominations on February 8th. The biggest surprise if that they've shunned the energetic precision of West Side Story in Best Editing but somehow Don't Look Up (with considerable pacing / rhythm problems) was honored. tick, tick... BOOM!'s nomination is interesting given the West Side Story cold shoulder. The list of nominees and a few more comments after the jump...
