Here's what's new for home viewing this past week or so.

New Blu-Rays/DVDS
• Mary Poppins Returns We here at TFE, despite being a musicals-inclined site, gave this one really short shrift this past season. It was not intentional but it was just that dang Christmas release date when everything is happening all at once. If you'd still like to discuss it let us know in the comments and perhaps we'll do a belated write-up
• Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse so fun... though we worry it'll spur a million sequels which will, by the very nature of the novelty of this one, be inferior.

Aidy Bryant in "Shrill"

Aidy Bryant has been stealing scenes left and right for years now. From a brief stint on Girls, to a supporting role in The Big Sick, to her notable (and Emmy nominated) work on Saturday Night Live, Bryant has been diligently carving out a space for her voice to be heard. Fortunately for long-time fans, 2019 is the year where she has fully paid her dues and doesn't have to steal the scenes anymore since they're centered on her.  

Shrill, on Hulu today, is the adaptation of Lindy West’s memoir of the same name. Following timid journalist Annie (Bryant), the series explores what it means to be a plus-size woman living in a world that has excluded them from the cultural conversation...

I ❤️ Oatmeal

I had this theory ¾th of the way through Russian Doll that Oatmeal was responsible for the time loop. Cats, man. Cats. You never know what's really going on with them and multiple lives are no big deal.

P.S. Natasha Lyonne is an incredible actress and I think it's time the world spoke it as one.

Wait James Marsden is the other man in this movie? (You may recall I told you I hadn't seen it when Kim was writing up its famous kiss last month. Somehow I didn't know that Rachel McAdams had to choose between Marsden and Gosling? Tough life, that girl leads.) Oh and did you hear that weird story about how Netflix changed the ending to The Notebook in the UK? I wouldn't have known the difference but bizarre. How is that even legal?

Better Things Season 3: Back and Better Than Ever

Better Things being renewed for a third season was the miracle we all deserved. Since co-creator/ executive producer Louis C.K. was fired, any worries about the series maintaining its high-wire act of cynical humor and raw emotion should be put to rest. Where the magic of Better Things laid all along was is in its leading lady's craftsmanship. Writing, directing, and playing single mother and working actress Sam, Pamela Adlon is a 2019 force to be reckoned with. 

Better Things has arrived in the wake of a highly contentious Oscar season, and it could not have come back at a better time. Built into every moment is a snapshot (sometimes literal) of the mundane, almost thoughtless acts we so often take for granted.
