April Foolish Oscar Predix Pt 1 - Best Animated Feature

by Nathaniel R

It seems almost cruel to begin a new year of Oscar punditry with Best Animated Feature since the hot trailer of the moment is Marcel The Shell With Shoes On, which probably won't be eligible. The film combines live action with its endearing stop-motion and that's mostly a no-no. The only film we remember that's been deemed eligible that did that was The Lego Movie though it's live-action section was extremely brief (and it's worth noting that it was a surrprise snub in the end).

Already in the year one possibly major Oscar contender has emerged with Pixar's Turning Red though it will face stiff in-house competition with the release of Toy Story prequel Lightyear in the summer.  After the jump a preview of Animated Features coming our way in 2022. Which of them will delight the Academy...

Top Ten: Greatest Onscreen Pigs

Did you know that it's National Pig Day? Now you do! The day was created back in 1972. To celebrate we thought we'd list the ten best screen pigs of all time with apologies to Pua from Moana and more. If we've forgotten an essential pig, we trust you'll let us know in the comments.

Streaming Roulette, July: Reese doesn't live under the silver lake anymore

As is our practice we've selected 8-10 titles and frozen the films at utterly random moments without cheating (whatever comes up comes up!). It's our way of previewing new titles streaming in the first half of JULY 2019. (★ means we recommend catching them.) Please do let us know if you're dying to discuss any of the films and maybe we'll write about them.

Ready? Let's go...

Why did I get stuck with the janky old broke hobo Spider-Man?

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) on Netflix ★
Watched this again on a whim with a friend who was curious because it won the Oscar. He's not into animated movies or superhero movies and he totally enjoyed it. Thus are its many inventive delights. It really holds up to viewing number two. Jam-packed with details you can easily miss on the first round.

Watch at Home: Into the Poppins-Verse and Triple Shoplifting Frontiers

Here's what's new for home viewing this past week or so.

New Blu-Rays/DVDS
Mary Poppins Returns We here at TFE, despite being a musicals-inclined site, gave this one really short shrift this past season. It was not intentional but it was just that dang Christmas release date when everything is happening all at once. If you'd still like to discuss it let us know in the comments and perhaps we'll do a belated write-up
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse so fun... though we worry it'll spur a million sequels which will, by the very nature of the novelty of this one, be inferior.

More DVDs and new to streaming titles after the jump...

Links: Mike & Maleficent & Marvel & The Mother

Spirit Airlines are decorating their planes to "soar" with Dumbo. That seems like a costly promotion, there!
Slant ranks all the Marvel films. I found this interesting because it's a) insane and b) the people they've assigned to write up the movies dont necessarily agree with their ranking in the list so it's weirdly schizophrenic
/Film confusing and bizarre history of Captain Marvel in the comic books
THR Idris Elba in talks to replace Will Smith in the Suicide Squad sequel

After the jump Maleficent 2's teaser poster, Gregg Araki's new series, Rock Hudson, Magic Mike casting, and more...
