"Movies for Grownups" Awards - 20th Anniversary

Dame Judi Dench as "Granny" in Belfast

The AARP 'Movies For Grownups' Awards is now 20 years old. They'll be airing a PBS special on March 18th to celebrate their 20th anniversary. This year their favourites were Belfast with 8 nominations and West Side Story with 6. Their awards specifically honor filmmakers and actors over 50 which is why their acting lineups are generally a combination of actors with genuine Oscar buzz paired with random celebrity fillers. Though let's just say in their supporting categories they largely have no excuse for their lapses of taste since plenty of great roles / performances come from the over 50 set each year...

Oscar Trivia: Three Nominated Actresses

I'm sure you've already read Nathaniel's awesome breakdown of the films with double acting nominations.  I love that specific type of Oscar trivia.  Along those same lines, what if all three West Side Story's actresses all end up nominated?  How many times has a film nominated three actresses from the same film?  Not very often.  But that wasn't always the case.

The Supporting categories were added in 1936 and it only took three years for the first three-actress set of nominees.  Both Vivien Leigh and Hattie McDaniel won Oscars, while Olivia de Havilland earned a nomination for Gone with the Wind. That 1939 triple set off a trend...

SAG "Surprise" Predictions

Will the size and stardom of DON'T LOOK UP make it a SAG favourite?

Because this season has had so little drama, let's have a little fun with punditry instead of being concerned with being correct. Let's predict one surprise in ALL of the Screen Actors Guild movie categories. This was hard to do as the natural instinct is to be "as correct / as prescient" as possible and there obviously won't be a surprise in EVERY category. That just doesn't happen.

But it was the challenge we set ourselves, so here we go...

Interview: Mike Faist on nihilistic teens, stardom, and "West Side Story"

Mike Faist on his "transcendent" experience making West Side Story

The reinvention of West Side Story (2021) has been the subject of much conversation since it opened, from Spielberg's incredibly enduring career, to the health of the movie musical genre, to the complicated subject of its Oscar prospects since the 1961 picture was a sweeper. The one thing that's felt especially unanimous in the response, though, is the exciting work from a trio of Broadway breakouts making a very big leap into movie stardom: Tony nominees Ariana DeBose and Mike Faist and Tony winner David Alvarez (Bernardo). I had the pleasure of sitting down with our new Riff, Mike Faist a couple of weeks ago to discuss the movie and his career (well, sort of. Read on).

He was in great spirits, laughing frequently, and filled with praise for his co-stars. Coincidentally we had both just been back to a Broadway show for the first time since the shutdown. He describes theater as an important "communal empathy project" and West Side Story continues that tradition.

Faist is funny and thoughtful. He is also, as it turns out, self-deprecatingly aware of his caginess around certain topics, like, his future and stardom...
