Are You New?

Professor (Nathaniel) R.My psychic powers tell me that some of you are new.

You know how some television series make it nearly impossible for newbies what with their complex mythologies, beloved idiosyncracies and verbal/visual shorthand for long running threads? I sometimes worry about new readers here at The Film Experience. Do they slip away in confusion? A friend once told me that TFE is way too complex with its hiearchies of heroines and love-to-hate-them "villains" that you'd need a user guide, or perhaps a castle map to navigate the throne rooms and dungeons of the cinephilia.

I don't know about all that but IF you're new, please say so in the comments and welcome!

The easiest way to get acquainted would be to check out the Best of... posts, top ten lists, Oscar coverage, or click around to regular programming like Hit Me..., "First and Last" quizzes, Unsung Heroes, or Curio. In the sidebar to your right you can find links to the most recent reviews. We've been on a bit of an animation kick lately. Oh and mutants.

Nathaniel -- sorry to refer to myself in the third person (it happens) -- also really likes to draw which is not something you get much of on other movie sites.

Welcome and stick around. Try us out on your preferred reader feed.

Yeah, I am relatively new. I have been reading for about a month, maybe. I can't remember where I saw this link, but I did, and then when I got here, there was a picture of Manuel Munoz's new novel in the corner of the page. I had just read that book and liked it a lot, so I thought to myself, "This must be a pretty cool site." And it is a cool site. Yeah, it takes a while to figure out how it works and what is going on, but I don't mind being patient and figuring it out. I mean, that's part of the fun.

timothy -- WELCOME! glad you're enjoying. That book is so good. I'm sure Manuel will be glad to know of other fan of his superb writing.

You DRAW?! I've been here for years and never knew this. I'm not sure where I thought those drawings (including some of you) were coming from, but I didn't quite make the connection that you were doing it yourself. I guess I thought you had talented friends... ha!

No, it's all me under the "nathaniel's drawings' tag. the only time it isn't is when it's "Curio" which covers a lot of different artists or sometimes a drawing that i link to or include in a link roundup but i always try to credit the people.

Yeah his Black Swan drawing was my background for a time I remember.

Nathaniel, I really wish I could donate money...but I'm starting college next week. So I'm already a little scared about money haha. Never know when that $2.50 will be my money for dinner. D:

You must really love that Beauty the the Beast gif....I swear it's been like the fourth time I've seen it on this blog. Ha, adorbs.

The complicated mythologies are why I've been reading you for seven years! I think it'd be entertaining for us all if such a fan guide WERE compiled—although it's funny how the villains (particularly Zeeeeeeeee and Beelzebub) haven't been around too much lately. I wish Hilary Swank would do more roundtable conversations with vastly more intelligent people so you'd have an excuse to make fun of her.

I also want to know more about your hatred of Melanie Griffith.

June 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHayden W

I also want to probe Beelzebub further about why she believes so strongly that Hollywood is racist against "linear storytelling."

June 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHayden W

Hayden W -- don't speak of probing her!

Been reading for a few months, but just started commenting :)

Alejandro -- welcome. commenting is a new level of wonderment. It's like fuel for blogging. and everyone needs fuel. THANKS FOR BEING HERE.

Rami & Hayden -- maybe I *should* do a user's manual. ;)

I am NOT new here, but it's one of the handful of regrets I have in moving my blogging preferences to Tumblr that I've slowed-to-a-crawl my used-to-be regular visits to The Film Experience. When I do make it back here, I'm reminded of what an impassioned and sensational film writer you are, and what a pleasure it is visiting your site. Great to read you again.
