Red Carpet Globes Pt 1: Lisbeth is Wednesday

Last week on Red Carpet Convos, Joanna and I were trying on gowns; I borrowed Penelope's (don't judge) and she wore Evan Rachel's.  This week Kurt and I gawk at the Golden Globes but alas, there's no word on which of these dresses Joanna would wear.

Nathaniel: Welcome back to Red Carpet Convos, Kurt. This was meant to be a three-way but Joanna had a fashion emergency off stage of some sort. She's here in spirit and promises to return!‬
Kurt:  A Wardrobe malfunction, naturally.‬
Nathaniel: ...which very few ladies were actually having on the Globes red carpet. Everyone (well almost everyone) was so put together. Let's start with Best Actresses of Yore.

Miss 2005, Ms 2008, Dame 2006, Double Dipper 1988 & 1991, and Mrs 2002

Kurt:  ‪Reese gets my Lazy Trophy of the evening. ‬Between the dress and that wind-blown hair, she looks like she's shooting Bridesmaids 2...in Chicago.
Nathaniel:  ‪Lazy is an odd adjective for Reese since her signature roles are so go-getter ambitious but career-wise and fashion wise. Okay, maybe.‬
Kurt:  ‪Yes on go-getter, but doesn't this outfit feel grab-and-go?‬
Nathaniel:  ‪I feel the same way about Kate Winslet since she's been doing only black and white for, what, four years now? Her walk-in s like hitting the "desaturate" button on Photoshop. But she looks sensational anyway.‬
Kurt: I'm with you. It's "matronly" as all the fashion cops have no doubt screeched, but she just looks so beautiful. I even like the clutch, i mean "trophy placeholder"

Nathanile: Hee. Hey, trophies are the best red carpet accessories. Did you hear Helen Mirren doing the voice of Becky on last night's Glee?‬
Kurt:  ‪ha! no! the boyfriend and i missed Glee. we watched Stage Beauty, with Claire and Billy Crudup.
Nathaniel:  ‪My deepest apologies. You're still functional this morning?‬
Kurt:  ‪hahaha...aw. yes, it's a mess. but in terms of sexuality, i had fun.‬
Nathaniel:  ‪That sentence out of context! Watch...

in terms of sexuality, i had fun.‬
-Kurt

Kurt:  ‪omg indeed‬. whoops. But back to this damn dame. Regal as always. Definitely red carpet MVP year in year out‬

Yes, she did!Nathaniel:  I think Jodie wore this color for her first Oscar win? Anyway, it's my favorite color on her.
Kurt:  ‪I do like Jodie's outfit; however i keep getting, A Fish Called Jodie‬
Nathaniel:  ‪A Fish Called Jodie. Now I am imagining Jodie seducing Jamie Lee Curtis ...in French.
Kurt: It could happen.  I know everyone loves nicoles dress, but, bless her, she's such a perennial offender for me. and this number looks like her kids glued macaroni all over it
Nathaniel: Wrong. Jodie and Nicki Kidman Nicki Kidman both look like the movie stars they are. Or were...? The weirdest thing about winning an Oscar is sometimes how much it's like a cliff face rather than a peak.‬ Not for these two in particular. I'm just thinking aloud. Sorry, let's call it the ‬‪Susan Sarandon effect when Oscar is like The End. Mabe I'm only thinking of her because she used to favor the peekaboo cleavage that Kate is blessing us with.‬ It's for ladies that are proud of their racks.‬
Kurt:  ‪yes. more on Madonna later‬
Nathaniel: HA! So when I was assembling that "previous winners" lineup i kept wanting to including Laura Linney, Glenn Close and Julianne Moore but then had to remember. Statue Repellent!‬

Kurt:  ‪Poor Julianne...

Psychotic Agent, Silent Actress, Perpetual Loser, Perfection, YELLOWWWWWWWW

MORE AFTER THE JUMP

Nathaniel:  ‪I know everyone thinks that Julianne will win the Emmy or the Globe for her Sarah Palin but I'm not convinced. Statue repellent I swear to god. Sometimes It seems like the only thing she's ever won is the Daytime Emmy in the 80s! ‬
Kurt:  ‪What did she win that for? I was in footy pajamas‬

Nathaniel: Sure, brag about your youth! I can't remember the name of the show. But i think she played two characters? one evil, natch. Identical cousins maybe?
Kurt:  ‪hahaha ok. Alas, i'm not nuts about her dress. However, it is a big improvement over that one-armed, jewelry noose monstrosity from last year. and i am certianly digging the earringsoh and her skin just blows me away. how does she do it. her skin is RIDICULOUS
Nathaniel: It's even spookier/perfect in person. Translucent! ‪I wish Juli would wear those earrings everywhere at all times like Janet Jackson and the hoop with key in the 80s -- also when you were in footy pajamas. Don't! Personal branding without the heated irons.
Kurt:  ‪haha‬

Nathaniel: Can I reveal to you that the amount of yellow (Patton) and yellow influenced (Pyle) on the red carpet this season is making me queasy. I loathe yellow. So naturally, Steven Soderbergh decided to revolt against the perpetual grey/blue nature of action movies by making a yellow one. HAYWIRE‬!
Kurt:  ‪ugh. don't get me started. Haywire. Psh. Jaundicewire.‬ And Paula patton looks absurd. When you sent me these pics last night, i wrote: Mission: Impossible -- Big Bird's Drapes.

Nathaniel: Maybe she's auditioning for Soderbergh? P.S. ‬Emma Stone is maybe best dressed of the night for me. It's just so elegant and dramatic. The vertical ilnes. The eagle / hawk belt? the sharp shoulder. Perfect.

Kurt:  ‪Yes. She looks spectacular. And just a quick note, too, that i'm head over heels for claire danes these days more than usual‬.
Nathaniel:  ‪Did you not used to finish the full rotation? Why more than usual: fashion? perpetual Hugh Dancy accessorizing? Homeland?‬
Kurt:  ‪All of the above. esp. Homeland. She is so freaking good on that show. I think it's her best role ever‬.
Nathaniel: She's had a lot of those now. Lucky girl.‬ Where to now, Kurt?
Kurt:  ‪On to?‬ Fine then. from Claire Danes to Glenn Close, who I am so hating on this season. Luckily, she's given me ammo: her bodice looks like it's wearing Albert Nobbs's mustache‬.

Albert, Aibeline, Gilda, Lisbeth, and Michelle Williams

Nathaniel:  ‪Albert has no moustache! That was not part of her elaborate Clark Kent quality transformative disguise. How can you hate on Glenn? She looked so sad about losing at the Globes. I guess her 3 Emmys and Tony and 2 Golden Globes can comfort her.‬
Kurt:  ‪Well, you know how I feel about that performance. And poor Elizabeth Olsen and/or Kirsten Dunst are being cheated out of oscar noms ‬‪because of her!‬
Nathaniel: Your math is faulty there. She can't block both of them and it's not like Rooney Mara won't swoop in for the fifth slot if Glenn stumbles on Tuesday morning.

Kurt:  Yes you are correct. I'm just saying, the whole knee jerk nominee sitch irks me‬.
Nathaniel:  ‪Understood. I'm a bit weirded out by the Rooney Mara obsession sweeping the web. I loved her in The Social Network and I think she's much better than she even needs to be in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo but people need to be careful what they wish for. If she is the surprise nominee on Tuesday, I'm betting she replaces Tilda and not Glenn. Dream project traction goes a long way for people.‬
Kurt:  The late-game clout of that film is quite surprising (though perhaps not in retrospect)‬
Nathaniel:  ‪I wish i'd seen Rooney Mara's fashion sense before this awards season because I think her dark and edgy and Lisbeth-stylings feel an awful lot like film promotion rather than genuine 'this is how i always dress!' but i could be wrong. ‬She didn't even dye her hair back to its natural color.

Kurt:  ‪I've been chalking it up to, "well, I've been working with what i've got post-performance," but she certainly could have switched it up by now. Unless, of course, she's just waiting around for sequel production (she implied as much re: the piercings).
Nathaniel:  ‪It might have seemed like a more transformative performance had she shown up to awards shows all floral, flouncy and bubbly.‬
Kurt:  ‪Gabby Sidibe‬!
Nathaniel: Exactly. Right now Rooney is reminding me of Wednesday Addams without the sense of humor.‬

Kurt:  She looks like somebody died. "Wait."‬
Nathaniel:  ‪LOL. I mean this with all sincerity: I would have Oscar nominated Christina Ricci for "Addams Family Values". It's true. I wasn't writing yet but in my personal lists at the time she was even my winner!

FLASHBACK THOUGHT-BALLOON  ALERT: NATHANIEL'S FAVORITE SUPPORTING ACTRESSES FROM THE BYGONE YEARS OF 1993. ACTUAL LIST. NO FACE-SAVING SWITCHES TO REFLECT CONSENSUS OR SECOND THOUGHTS.

  • WINNER: Christina Ricci, Addams Family Values
    other nominees
  • Gong Li, Farewell My Concubine
  • Kelly Lynch, Three of Hearts
  • Anna Paquin, The Piano
  • Madeleine Stowe, Short Cuts
    runner up:
  • Joan Cusack, Addams Family Values "what about Debbie's needs?"

Okay that was weird. Segueway back to dresses!

Nathaniel: Remember that comment I made about some dresses looking better with trophies as accessories. Look no further than‬ Michelle Williams. Turns out the gold statue really brings out its color and livens it up. Who knew?
Kurt:  Michelle's speech was cute. I love how she's so contained in person, but so giving on screen. I LOVE Michelle Williams. She's such an exciting actress.
Nathaniel: I feel like you and I aren't sympatico at all with the best actress category this year...
Kurt: And we usually are.

Nathaniel: Williams is one of my favorite actresses working but she doesn't even make my top twelve this year. That's how great this year was in Best Actress. Okay, we must pause to appreciate Tilda Swinton. It's maybe my favorite look on her ever and that's saying a lot.‬
Kurt: Tilda looks like god descended. She's from another plane. I do think this is a little safe for her, but whatevs. That hair with the dress is just the coolest.‬

Nathaniel: I just love that it's such an entire look and yet if you separate any part of it it's something else entirely: dressy, casual, elegant, edgy, retro, modern...‬
Kurt:  ‪LOL, I mean this very lovingly, but you sound a bit like a red carpet pundit on a daytime show, "and you see, she can wear the jacket with a nice pair of flats!" hehehe‬
Nathaniel: ‪I mean it a more spiritual way, trust.‬ It is all things at once. It encompasses the entire cosmos!

ON TO PART TWO

Matt --- hot. Only I guess statues aren't so cuddly. particularly that Emmy. Those things will poke your eye out.

where as all those oscar curves make it much easier to cuddle (sword excepted)

For me Tilda is the absolute winner on the Red Carpet. I always love her outfits, but it's so great to see her in something much more feminine than usual that still manages to be edgy and quirky enough to be "Tildaish". And the hair, that is a piece of art!

Bow down to Goddess Swinton, minions!

Joanna got called out to try and extricate Diane Kruger from her Critics Choice dress. She has a blowtorch and a crowbar but she may be a while...

Anna Wintour has crowned Rooney the new fashion girl, so that's why she's being obsessed over and in fact, her bitchy attitude makes people in those circles love her even more. Just look at some of the commentary on fashion blogs. She's the new Gwyneth--privileged background and all.

Rooney, Emma (OMG so BEAUTIFUL!!!!), Tilda, Julianne, Nicole = all of them were absolutely gorgeous.

January 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterYavor

Pretty much had the same thought for Michelle's ensemble...

Pre-win: What is she wearing? Is that velvet? Is she serious about that headband?
Post-win: You know the purple is such a lovely shade. The headband is pretty cute.

Ugh. Rooney Mara is such a drip. I'm sorry.

January 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRJ

I'll go for Nicole as the best dressed. She really looked stunning!

I really hope Glenn wins the Oscar for Original Song. I think she truly deserves it; I still can't believe Madonna won the Globe. That was the worst starfucking I've ever seen. Awful song from a mediocre film, and Madonna is just rubbing me the wrong way lately with her diva antics. It's sad that Glenn could never win an acting Oscar, but I still think she deserves the Song one.

Overall, I think everyone did pretty well in what they wore! No one was atrocious. Pretty good. Kate, Helen, Emma, Viola, and Tilda all look amazingly stunning.

Re: Julianne as Palin - it would be the irony to end all ironies if Julianne, who has played so many great soulful characters, won her first industry awards for playing a soulless one. At least the danger of, say, Laura Linney playing Bachmann in a few years has probably been averted.

I really could have done without Paula Patton's dress. As a matter of fact, I could do without Paula Patton.

Favorite look of the night - Tilda. All bow down in worship to La Swinton.
Runner Up - Diane Lane. So classy and old school lovely.

January 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterRose

Tilda Swinton was the coolest of the night. That's how you make it your own, y'all. Take notes.

January 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

ha love this! Tilda was my favorite. She looked stunning. So excited for what she does the rest of the season. Hopefully this is the last red carpet for The Girl with the Dragon Attitude.

January 18, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLola

I was waiting for your Red Carpet coverage as you have always the most amusing insights (a la par with the fug girls.) Hands down, Gilda—excuse me—, Tilda once again demonstrated what mere mortals can only aspire to. Seeing here in the red carpet was like experiencing the creation of the universe in The Tree of Life.

I seriously hope Rooney doesn't boot out Swinton come Oscar Nominations, or I'll cut her! Oh, yes I will. These days I can't stand that frigid little girl.

January 19, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJones

I saw Swinton, but I thought David Bowie

I think the emmys, the golden globes and the Sags will be a great battle between nicole kidman and julianne moore next year!!!

January 19, 2012 | Unregistered Commentercole

What's so wrong about yellow? Reese Witherspoon, for example, never looked better than that Oscar (was it Oscar?) when she was in yellow.

January 19, 2012 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

@Nat - Rooney Mara before Lisbeth.

Emma Stone best dressed all the way. I love lanvin!
And the show that Julianne Moore won her Emmy for is As the World Turns .. I know.
She played Frannie Hughes and her half sister Sabrina Hughes.

January 19, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNina

@Bia, what bitchy attitude???

January 19, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterkara

Commenting on Close's reaction at the Globes. I wonder if she was really upset about losing when the camera cut to her right after Streep said, "Viola, you're my girl." Who cares, right? Anyway, everyone knows Weinstein 'bought' his awards. All of his major nominees seemed to have won. It's common for the Globes, isn't it? Remember Sharon Stone's nomination? Did she win, too?
