Golden Globe Winners: That Damn Bear Movie and the Martian Surge.
Technical issues with my TV and my phone and my computer tonight? -- someone did some voodoo on TFE for the booziest Hollywood party this year! They suck but their timing is pure evil genius so we bow down. Obviously there will be a bit more Globes tomorrow but for tonight, a quick list of winners, super brief thoughts and amusing tweets after the jump...
We kick off with an image of an unfunny joke because it's so emblematic of the evening both because the jokes were terrible. (Ricky Gervais is the worst. And somehow he is popular enough to keep bringing back)
See there's a bear in the Revenant so Jonah Hill obviously thought was hi-lar-ious to wear a bear hoodie and claim to be the bear from the Revenant. Doesn't Jonah Hill know that the bear is is female? The surprise surge of The Revenant tonight -- which everyone (including me) thought was not in the race to win much beyond Leonardo Dicaprio's Best Survivor in a Motion Picture trophy made this fairly innocuous tweet hours before the show started from the parody account Revenant Bear look eerily prescient after the fact...
me coming for ur golden globes. (also just woke up) pic.twitter.com/PD6XC8J8eY

I mean seriously. Did anyone predict this movie to win the most prizes tonight?
Or no, possibly this tweet was the most prescient of the night

Because Ricky Gervais. Ugh. (I said this already. Moving on...)
This awards season has been wildly strange. At first Spotlight looked like a quiet frontrunner with The Martian as threatening populist alternative. Then suddenly female driven masterworks Carol and Mad Max: Fury Road started making bold moves for critical dominance (as well they should) with Spotlight kinda sorta holding them off. Then it the guilds were all but what about Trumbo and Straight Outta Compton and The Big Short. And Brooklyn and Room kept standing in the room but were knocked over again and again... like what are they still doing here? (clue: they've very good pictures). And now ... The Revenant? And maybe back to The Martain again. Each week we have to rethink everything.
That's healthy but it's also... strange. Because usually consensus is a mighty force that has no time for you personal feelings about "bests" It wants one or two pictures to take everything!

When was the last time a film as bad as THE REVENANT won best picture over films as good as CAROL and MAD MAX?

Just realised what a trick they missed by not having Lady Gaga present Best Director. "And the winner is... Alejandro, Alejandro, Ale-Ale-Al

When Winslet and Hathaway were hungry for awards they were trashed for wanting it. But when Leo is hungry for awards, he "deserves" it.

I love how both Jamie Fox and Quentin Tarantino made that momention almost exclusively about themselves in the absolute worst way. Thankfully, America Ferrera and Eva Longoria's following bit was so hilarious. What a timely palate cleanser.
Awwe.. Christian Slater was adorable...good for him!!!
you are missing best score for h8full 8
Happy for Rachel Bloom. That show was dancing like nobody's watching even before they knew that (sadly) nobody is watching.
Mark Rylance was just robbed by Sly Stallone.
Well-deserved IMO for Stallone. Never been a fan, but that was truly the best supporting performance of the year.
By the look of it, there might not be any movie / TV show winning more than one award tonight.
Love the acting wins so far. If he's nominated on Thursday, Sly is so winning that Oscar after tonight's applause and speech. Love the Kate Winslet win, but I don't see it affecting the Oscar race much.
Loving The Big Short being shut out so far (as of screenplay)
Mozart in the Jungle is this year's Transparent I guess. Anyone watch that show?
I had never heard of 'Mozart in the Jungle' until today.
Stallone conveniently forgot every black person responsible for Creed in his speech.
Christian Slater is adorable. Heathers and his great early 90's run forever!
I think tonight is the night people start questioning Spotlight's frontrunner status (if they haven't started already). That Screenplay loss probably means that it's winning Best Picture ONLY (I can't see them giving Director to McCarthy). If it is the frontrunner, it's a very vulnerable one.
Or who knows? Frankly I wouldn't be surprised if the Globes threw us a curveball and sent Spotlight home with nothing. Avatar won Best Picture at the Globes. Who says Mad Max can't?
Oh my Gaga....
Golden Globes just defy all odds and predictions.
yep Lady Gaga just won a Golden Globe. They are throwing some curve balls but honestly, I am happy about the wins so far.
Leo's reaction to Gaga!
Tom hanks should have metioned Streep in that company... Denzel Washington... A lot of forgettable films....!?
Oh noes. Poor Todd.
Official the foreign press hates Viola Davis.
Alejandro G. Innaritu is so insufferable. I hope he does not win the Oscar again.
Jennifer Lawrence completes the David O trifecta. Let's hope they're not going to attempt the quadrifecta.
JLAW NO WHYYY
/3rtful . . . give it a break. why do you have to be so melodramatic. Taraji is awesome and a perfectly valid choice, and I worship Viola.
Say what you want about Joy the film, but Lawrence's performance in Joy was unquestionably stunning.
I think I dislike Inarritu more than any other figure in contemporary film. He is pretentious, his movies are insufferable, and he's had some pretty ridiculous criticisms about the US economic system, given how expensive the films he chooses to finance here in America are. (I know, it's not about the budgets, right? Then let's see what you can do with a $5 million budget instead of $150 million, AGI...)
That said, I really like these awards so far. Taraji, Jon Hamm, Oscar Isaac, Winslet, Aaron Sorkin, Lawrence were all good to see.
Not surprising Alejandro won remember globes gave best picture to Babel they obviously like him a lot.
It's a shame to give out comedy awards and then give them to films that are not funny. Why bother?
Not to mention that this was actually Inarritu's first GG for directing. Might not have the same type of backing at the Oscars.
In such an unpredictable awards season... Why so many uninspiring winners?
"from the hunger games... julianne moore"
what.
Kate Gregson done won a Golden Globe!
But I do like the Larson and Dicaprio win :)
Lawrence and GaGa winning was very uninspired.
I think the year of the unpredictable acting categories will be coming to an end as Leo, Brie, and Sly extend their leads tonight. Supporting Actress remains the wildcard.
No love for Carol :( Too much love for The Revenant :(
As the great Liz Lemon would say,"I need to talk to some food about this".
The Revenant is an almost indefensible choice for best picture... Hopefully not a good predictor for Oscar.
I have to admit I like how totally up in the air the Best Picture race seems now. The movie people assumed was the frontrunner (Spotlight) was shut out, and to top that off, the movie a lot of people assumed was becoming its biggest threat (The Big Short) was ALSO shut out.
Best Director is likewise completely open.
It's rare that we even get a two-movie race, but could we actually have a three or even FOUR-movie race this year? Let's hope the guilds don't all go for the same thing.
Well best picture is now a total mystery. Which I actually think is awesome. The Revenant won't win the oscar, I don't think, but suddenly Spotlight looks real shaky as a front runner and The Big Short lost a lot of steam, could the Martian win? It's been awhile since they rewarded a crowd pleaser.
For the most part: ugh.
"I know, it's not about the budgets, right? Then let's see what you can do with a $5 million budget instead of $150 million, AGI.."
The Revenant only cost $60 million (not much in Hollywood) and his previous movies never cost more that $25 million. Given that he managed to make Amores Perros for only 2.5 million I'm pretty sure he's more than capable of making something good for 5 million.
It really sucks that Carol couldn't get enough traction to hoist it to the top of that weak BP Drama field. I don't know if it's an anti-Haynes thing or an anti-gay thing or just seeing $$$ instead of quality, but The Revenant is just nowhere near the winner.
Uninspiring is the word for Lawrence's win (though not worse than Streep's win for Iron Lady in GG, oh wait, the Oscar, oh wait everything!). Yay for Larson and Stallone and Winslet.
Wish Carol had won something!
Carol and Spotlight completely shut out.
The chances of Carol getting a Oscar Best Pic nom are now fading.
I think Stallone has just sewn up the Best Supporting Oscar. It'll be the fairytale moment - winning 40 years after being nominated for playing the same role.
Wow, this may be the most wide-open Best Pic field now since 2006 or even 1995. Martian, Revenant, Spotlight, and Big Short all have to be considered in the running. And maybe that means the vote gets split and Carol or Mad Max wins up the middle. (Marsha gets the wishful thinking Globe.)
Unfortunately, this means I think I have to see The Revenant. In a theatre. Soon.
Brie Larson won. Hopefully it's the start of a sweep to the Oscar podium.
I can't believe they overlooked 2 legends, Ridley Scott & George Miller to give Inarritu both best director and best dramatic film.
Also it seems that surviving ONE Canadian winter was enough to seal that win. I've lived through decades of Canadian winters... what pussies.
George Miller & Ridley Scott shot in blistering hot weather in deserts, but that doesn't count, and they certainly didn't complain about "their struggle".
On a happier note, it was fun to see Jim Carrey in truly great form being far more entertaining than
Gervais. Brie Larson is a worthy winner but I'm really sad for Saoirse Ronan.
MJS: According to The Wrap, the estimated budget on The Revenant was $135 million, and the final budget was in the realm of $165 million.
It's nice AGI made Amores Perros for nickels and cents... but that was a long time ago.
http://www.thewrap.com/revenant-budget-soars-to-165-million-with-new-regency-footing-most-of-bill-exclusive/
Here's to hoping PGA, DGA, and SAG each go to a different movie so this Best Picture confusion continues. (Although I wouldn't mind if Mad Max won PGA and DGA, still can't talk about Carol's lack of PGA).
