Part Two: 70 Best Gowns of the 70th Cannes Festival
Nathaniel R delivering your very last Cannes 2017 post *sniffle* If you missed Part One, that's here featuring Andie Macdowell, Eva Longoria, Michelle Yeoh, Berenice Bejo, Juliette Binoche, Kristin Scott Thomas, Isabelle Huppert, Fan Bingbing, Monica Bellucci, Uma Thurman and more. A few of those ladies show up again in Part Two!
70 BEST GOWNS OF CANNES 70
(Part One: 36-70 / Part Two: 1-35 is after the jump)
35. Aishwarya Rai in Ralph & Russo couture at 120 BPM
Focus pulling.
34. Marion Cotillard in Armani Privé at the 70th Anniversary
Va Va Indigo Boom
33. Svetlana Khodtchenkova in ??? at the 70th Anniversary
Gotta love a structurally ambitious gown
32. Eva Green in Alexander McQueen at Based on a True Story
Apparently that elaborate inky design is off a shipwreck. Well, Eva is a deadly siren!
31. Jessica Chastain in Givenchy Couture at Okja
The bottom of the dress has so much movement and that color on Chastain is perfect
30. Rooney Mara in Christian Dior at Closing Ceremonies
If Rooney Mara can't live in old black & white Hollywood then she will just continue to dress in only black or white gowns. But she has such style.
29. Isabelle Huppert in Nina Ricci at the Chopard Party
Such a sexy dress. I noticed one fashion blog complained about the color of the bra but to me it's perfect, as purples and yellows are complementary
28. Liu Wen in ??? at the Beguiled
Striking
27. Nicole Kidman in Rodarte at How to Talk to Girls at Parties
26 Julianne Moore in custom Louis Vitton at Okja
25 Jessica Chastain in Armani Privé at the 70th Anniversary
One of her best looks ever. So surprised that color is so spectacular on her.
24. Elle Fanning in Rodarte at The Beguiled
Pretty pretty princess part 1 of a few. Loving that long dark ribbon in her hair.
22. Greta Gerwig in Rodarte at The Meyerowitz Stories
Still so angry she didn't get nominated for 20th Century Women. Grrrr
21 Diane Kruger in Christian Dior at the 70th Anniversary
Kruger is a fashion darling for a reason. She wears everything so well. Love the double choker.
20. Elle Fanning in Christian Dior Couture at the 70th Anniversary
This dress should be the spokesperson for Springtime Glamour
18/19 Isabelle Huppert and Kim Min-hee in ??? at ???
I don't know who they're wearing or what event they're at (the internet tells me The Meyerowitz Stories but that doesn't feel right since they're all lined up posing like they're the stars... but it's also not The Day After because Kim Min-hee wore a different gown to that.
LOSING THE THREAD...
These two need to star together in a horror picture. Watching them stand their stiffly holding hands like international movie star versions of those hallway ghost girls in The Shining... standing there in their giant glamour smocks with high heels is too much and I need more. MORE. Even if it's the end of me.
17. Juliette Binoche in ??? at Okja
I saw this on a worst dressed list but gowns which swallow you up are totally on trend if the other women walking the runway are to be trusted. There's something about this one I can't put my finger on but I've obsessed over it a fair bit this week. Does anyone wear white as well and as regularly as Juliette Binoche?
16. Julianne Moore in Givenchy Couture at Opening Ceremonies
Hey guys. It's your semi-monthly reminder that Julianne Moore is finally an Oscar winner.
15. Fanbingbing in Christopher Bu at L'Amant Double
I've been obsessed with Cannes endless trunks of gowns at Cannes for years now. And she brought them again. Love that she pingpongs between Asian and European couture.
14. Aishwarya Rai in Michael Cinco Couture at Okja
Shes her own fairy godmother. Cinderella wishes.
13. Jacqueline Bissett at L'Amant Double
Another situation where media are not taking pictures of the right people. Bissett looked absolutely flawless at this premiere. The stunning assymetry of the collar, the queen like gaze. Just perfect. So happy she's working with François Ozon now and wondering what took her so long to return to French cinema (was the last time La Ceremonie with Huppert in 1995 or am I forgetting something? For younger readers, the 70s era sex symbol is actually British not French, but she speaks French and her mother was French)
12. Nicole Kidman in Calvin Klein at Killing of a Sacred Deer
Wonderful but I'll admit I don't worship it to quite the extent the greater internet seemed too. Almost. But I liked two of her other looks better. Stay tuned.
11. Tilda Swinton in Chanel at the 70th Anniversary
Okay so it's the only non-gown in this lineup (technically a jumpsuit) but your rules are meaningless to Cinema's Great Other, Tilda Swinton.
drum roll please for our finale...
THE TOP TEN GOWNS OF THE 70TH CANNES FILM FESTIVAL
10. Fan Bingbing in Louis Vitton at the 70th Anniversary
Gowns that are casually breathtaking but also look like you could just curl up and sleep in them when you get tired of being a movie star seem to be on trend this year (see also Juliette Binoche's best look and Isabelle and Kim's enveloping dresses)
09. Elle Fanning in Gucci at How to Talk to Girls at Parties
Elle is 19 now but it still feels weird to call her sexy. Nevertheless this verdant stunner is sexy enough that Fanning is already preparing us for her Movie Goddess 20s and 30s. (But where's Dakota? Come back to us Dakota!)
08. Diane Kruger in Jason Wu at In the Fade
The eventual Best Actress winner looked decadent and dramatic and sexy at her premiere. Cannes she transfer her Cannes glory to an Oscar nomination? Honestly it depends on what kind of distributor the film gets.
07 Elle Fanning in Vivien Westwood Couture at Opening Gala
Pretty princess.
06 Nicole Kidman in Armani Privé at the 70th Anniversary
One of her best looks ever, just totally natural beauty from someone often seen as calculating and frosty in her glamour and work. So chill (not temperature-wise) and so warmly radiant. The dress couldn't possibly fit any better.
05 Nicole Kidman in Michael Kors at The Beguiled (and Kim Ok-bin at Villaness)
Initially I thought this was going to be my favorite gown from Cannes 2017 but eventually I had to look beyond the Queen. But WOW WOW WOW. We can't even really deduct points that someone else (the great Korean actress Kim Ok-bin of Thirst fame) wore the same gown!
04. Tilda Swinton in Haider Ackermann at Okja
Tilda is always an event when she hits the red carpet. This Cannes only underlined that fact again.
03. Uma Thurman in Atelier Versace at the Closing Ceremonies
Outdoing Kidman (!!!) in the fringe sparkly goddess routine and just days after too. This is the kind of war we like -- no casualties and everyone wins. Uma looked so happy, the dress had so much movement, and it was so body forming she looked like a superhero. Her power being Stardom, naturally. She's still got it.
02. Fan Bingbing in Valentino Couture at The Beguiled
The Beguiled was THE fashion event of the festival given its huge female cast and how many goddesses came out for the premiere. Consider this perfect image of men in suits parting to let Bingbing like through they're the Red Sea and she's a holy woman (of fashion).
Also her date for the event was French actor Melvil Poupaud so she's clearly winning at life.
01. Kristen Dunst in Schiaparelli Couture at The Beguiled
Kiki didn't pose for very many pictures alone (I found only one!) as if she didn't realize she was the most beautiful she's ever been in baby blue, the dress, the gold belt detail, and the cleavage are all wows across the board. Our friend Farran aptly remarked that Kirsten's look was reminiscent of Elizabeth Taylor in her 60s heyday. If you have to remind people of past movie stars, steal from the best!

Kirsten Dunst <3
Beauty Overdose.
Min-hee has a (I heard) small role in Hong Sang-soo's Claire's Camera starring Huppert which screened out of competition. That might explain #18/19.
Jija's correct.
KIKI!!!!!!!!
Not loving your number one pick though Dunst looks amazing.
Bingbing is so out of this world beautiful.
It just dawned on me that Kidman really is like the center of Cannes. 4 projects, 2 with Farrell, 2 with Fanning, 1 with both of them, plus two of her in-competition films each winning awards. Wow
Fan Bingbing's dress from the closing ceremony was my favorite look of hers, but she's looked stunning the whole time. Kirsten Dunst looks fabulous! Elle Fanning's dress at the Beguiled is my favorite look from her, but her looks were all stunning. My favorite Chastain look was from the closing ceremony. Kidman looked stunning in all her looks.
Fan Bing Bing in that red Valentino Is! Everything!
You basically love everything. Why are fringes a thing?
Number one is sooooo underwhelming, Kidman, Huppert, Fanning & Swinton had way better looks in my opinion.
How could you possibly rank all of these? They are all amazing. It makes me want to go to Cannes even more now. Who cares about the films? I'm going for the fashion!
Elle Fanning in that Gucci - just a gorgeous fashion moment. And between #50 and #18 Huppert was looking great.
Binoche's dress just looks like a disaster to me. It looks like a wedding dress that a bride is forced to wear only because it has been handed down from her grandmother.
My favorite look wasn't even mentioned! Uma Thurman at the Opening Gala.
Dunst is deservedly number 1, i love it, it is the definition of dichotomy, the cleavage is yowza, the colour is all demure and lady. The fabric is soft and flowy the embroidery forms chains.
In a sea of people trying to outdo each other, the look that stands out the most is the one thats everything without trying.
I appreciate Elle Fanning and Fan Bingbing going for it. They look great. Kirsten Dunst looks great in that blue. Nicole, sigh. I don't like any of her looks. They are Olive Garden (brown dress), 4 year old dance toddler (tutu), and shimmery over 50 madam (silver number). People worship her too much, when many of those looks would be panned if someone more down to earth wore them. Rooney Mara is strange to me with the dark glasses and no smile. Is she an Albina? I wonder if anyone has estimated how much is spent by fashion houses and publicists on clothes for Cannes that have nothing to do with cinema. Looking forward to Wonder Woman.
