Oscar Stat Fun - No Sweeps in the Modern Era but can "EEAAO" change that?

by Nathaniel R

That complete sweep at the Spirits and SAG has us wondering now whether or not Everything Everywhere All At Once will win Best Picture but how many statues in total can actually win. We haven't seen a sweeper at the Oscars in a long long time. Yes some films have won all their categories but they aren't true "sweepers" i.e. thoroughly dominant movies. It would be technically accurate, for example, to say that CODA performed a clean sweep last season. It did win all of its categories but it wasn't a sweeper in any meaningful sense since it was only up for 3 Oscars.

In fact, a big sweep hasn't yet happened in the expanded Best Picture era!  Can Everything Everywhere All At Once change that? Let's look at the history and stats after the jump...

Drag Race RuCap: "50/50's Most Gagworthy Stars"

NATHANIEL R: Hello queens, I'm crashing your party this week for the RuCap because I have opinions too. (Shocker, I know).  In fact, I came in with every intention of stirring the pot and having a completely different take but after this 10th episode "50/50's Most Gagworthy Stars"... perhaps I won't be able too, since my some of my favourites didn't do that well. But... did anyone? This interview challenge with special guests Charo, Frankie Grande, and Love Connie was an excellent one. The challenge offered up multiple interview formats (walk and talk, seated intimate, cooking or other 'action')  and whatever you think of the three interviewees, none of them are lacking in personality (the hardest interviews are with introverts!). In short there was ample opportunity for all remaining queens to blind us with their charisma, but there was seriously little shining... the best we got was a bit of luster.

Which is not to say that it wasn't an enjoyable episode! Anyway I'm happy to be popping in...

Film Bitch Awards: Breakthrough Performers, Small Gem Performances, Memorable Scenes

by Nathaniel R

In a mad race to finish the Film Bitch Awards before the Oscars, we've posted five more categories!  Breakthrough of the Year features rising stars from the US (Stephanie Hsu, Brandon Perea), UK (Bella Ramsey), Finland (Aamu Milonoff), and Mexico (Diego Calva). It's not strictly an acting award (like the others) but more about which new stars we're most eager to see in another picture... immediately.

Best Actress in a Limited or Cameo Role is also up for the scene stealers who do a lot with a very little like Lia Williams who is so self-regarding and droll as the poet Edith Sitwell in Benediction.

Finally the Best Scenes page is in process now featuring Best Opening Scene (Triangle of Sadness "H&M / Balenciaga" has to be there), Best Ending (The Fabelmans horizon line naturally), Credit Sequence (Jackass Forever's dick kaiju terrorizes) and also a Dozen Memorable Scenes that don't fit into the other various scene categories.

Enjoy!

Oscar Volley: Best Original Screenplay...the "alternative Best Picture" award?

Team Experience is teaming up to discuss each Oscar category. Here's Mark Brinkerhoff and Elisa Giudici...

TÁR in the act of creation

MARK: Hello, hello! Get a look at the Best Original Screenplay nominees this year—all five are also Best Picture Oscar nominees. Now of course this isn’t unprecedented, namely in the modern era of (up to) 10 Best Picture nominees, but it *is* unusual. (2020 was the other year this complete overlap occurred.) Typically we’ll get at least one inspired, left-field choice in Best Original Screenplay (think BridesmaidsThe LobsterNightcrawler, etc.). Not this year, unfortunately.

So where does this leave us? With a pretty sterling lineup of nominees overall! Among the five—The Banshees of InisherinEverything Everywhere All at OnceThe FabelmansTárTriangle of Sadness—which strike you as the real deal this year?

Oscar Volley: When did Best Supporting Actor stop being a contest?

Team Experience is discussing the various Oscar categories. Here's Ben Miller, Elisa Guidici, and Nick Taylor discussing Best Supporting Actor.

NICK TAYLOR: Hi there, Elisa and Ben! Boy do I feel like we have the easiest acting category to evaluate for this year’s ceremony. Eric Blume and Chris James went over this category over two months ago and though their predictions didn't exactly match they both foresaw 4/5ths of Oscar’s lineup. My predictions were rubber-stamping the SAG list, so seeing Judd Hirsch and especially Brian Tyree Henry get in at the last minute felt like a real surprise to me. Ke Huy Quan, Brendan Gleeson, and Barry Keoghan made it as they were expected to, and even with Keoghan scoring a win with BAFTA, I think Quan’s looking like the most secure acting winner going into Oscar night.

With that being said, and before we get too far into the race, would y’all like to quickly share your favorite supporting actors who didn’t get nominated?
