"Parallel Mothers" - Teaser and Release Date

This is both agonizing timing and perfect timing. Sony Pictures Classics have just released this teaser for Parallel Mothers and have announced that the movie hits theaters on December 24th in the US. We fear that's way too late to build up the steam for a major Oscar play. International features often require a larger lead time to get conversation going. Factually speaking, all five of Pedro's Oscar-nominated films  (Women on the Verge, All About My Mother, Talk to Her, Volver, Pain and Glory) have begun their stateside rollouts in November.  On the other hand it's perfect timing for our about to launch "All About Pedro" series which begins this Thursday with his first feature Pepi Luci Bom (1980). This is entirely accidental but that means the new movie arrives the day after our series wraps up! 

Fernanda Montenegro should have won!

Glenn Close was right. During her latest awards campaign, AMPAS' favorite also-ran recalled the 1998 Best Actress race, concluding that the rightful winner wasn't Gwyneth Paltrow but "that incredible actress that was in Central Station." While that year's Oscar champion gets a lot of undue vitriol –she's excellent in Shakespeare in Love – it's hard to disagree that the trophy rightfully belonged to the great Brazilian thespian Fernanda Montenegro. The only Portuguese-speaking performance to be recognized by the Academy, this star turn has a special place in my heart. So much so that I feared my love was a product of nostalgia goggles. A re-watch disabused such notions. Montenegro's nominated work remains a towering achievement…

Oscar Predictions: Visuals, Score, Animation, and Sound

The Oscar charts are finally going up. Best Animated Feature was the first a month ago but it's been tweaked to reflect Belle, rising, post its special Cannes screening, as well as Disney's stingy release of Luca. We're saving Cinematography and Costume Design for their own posts tomorrow but for now the rest of the Visual charts as well as Score and Sound are up. Yes, we're predicting a strong showing for House of Gucci, Dune, and Eternals in craft categories. Take a look and sound off in the comments. 

The Honoraries: Danny Glover as Producer

Despite his fantastic career as an actor, Danny Glover isn't receiving an Honorary Oscar to recognize that work. Instead, AMPAS is honoring him with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award as a way of celebrating his lifelong actions as a community activist, fighting for worldwide justice, and other such efforts. If anything, those values are more imminently evident in Glover's filmography as a producer rather than as an actor. Since the early 90s, after becoming a box-office star, the American thespian started leveraging his success to try and make specific projects happen. Charles Burnett's To Sleep with Anger marked Glover's first experience as a producer, and the funding was mainly secured through his participation in Lethal Weapon 2. From then on, Danny Glover has been a strong supporter of underrepresented filmmakers, helping them make their cinematic dreams come true…
