The Tree of Life @ 10: The wonder of the movie theater

by Cláudio Alves

As a Portuguese cinephile, the last few weeks have been a weird mixture of happiness for others and ugly jealousy. Looking on social media, I can see international friends returning to movie theaters, fully vaccinated, while I remain at home, not knowing when such privileges will be accessible. I realize this bitterness is wrong, but I can't help it. I miss going to the movies quite terribly. I miss being engulfed by the images projected on the big screen and feeling a wall of sound crash over my head like a tidal wave. However, unlike other filmgoers, I don't care too much about the communal aspect of the experience (with the exception of film festivals).

As a way of exorcising these demons and explaining the yearning, let me describe one of the most memorable filmgoing experiences I can remember. It happened around a decade ago, upon The Tree of Life's release…

Emmy Watch: Will newcomers dominate Lead Actor in a Drama Series?

Our team is breaking down the top contenders in all the major Emmy race and highlighting some of our favorites over the next few weeks. Today, we’re looking at Best Actor in a Drama Series.

Both Sterling K. Brown and Milo Ventimiglia have been nominated for Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series at the Emmys in the past. Can they repeat this year?By Christopher James

Will the Emmys stick to their favorites or invite the popular stars of now? This eternal question rears its head yet again in the race for Outstanding Performance by a Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Previous winners, such as Sterling K. Brown, Matthew Rhys and Billy Porter, might take on precursor favorites (Josh O’Connor - The Crown) and hot newcomers (Regé-Jean Page - Bridgerton).

Who will fill out the category when nominations are announced on July 13th? Let’s take a look at the field...

How Had I Never Seen... "Girlfriends"?

by Cláudio Alves

This month, the Criterion Channel added Claudia Weill's 1978 debut feature Girlfriends to their roster. Since last year, the film has been part of the collection, but it's now available for streaming. Coincidentally, I've also recently purchased the European edition of the Blu-Ray. Taking this into account, as well as the fact that I've been hearing and reading wonderful things about this flick for ages, it seems like a good time to finally watch Girlfriends and share my first impressions with you, dear readers…

Yes No Maybe So: "The Eternals"

by Nathaniel R

Gemma Chan gets top billing (!!!) in "The Eternals"We had a full year off of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to COVID-19. But they're about to kick off their next long run towards, presumably, another epic decade-in-the-making event like "Avengers: Endgame". We don't yet know which narratives will be instrumental in that build-up but we do know that the MCU is taking a turn towards the magical, the mutant, and the outerspace, with a lot of sorcerers and aliens and outer space adventures upcoming. The Eternals aren't exactly aliens, but close enough, as they are otherworldly in their powers and temperament and have been living undetected amongst humans for centuries.

Let's Yes No and Maybe So ™ the new trailer after the jump...
