SAG Nominations

by Nathaniel R

It was a surprising morning at the SAG nominations with Bombshell coming in hot with 4 nominations (!!!) and Parasite becoming only the second foreign language film ever nominated for Oustanding Cast. In other news we saw the first chink in Netflix's considerable Oscar-seeking armor today as The Irishman and Marriage Story both arguably underperformed and Dolemite was shut out. (And, as always, we've investigated the "Cast" nominations to see who was left out.)

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role:

Christian Bale (“Ford v Ferrari”)

Leonardo DiCaprio (“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”)

Adam Driver (“Marriage Story”)

Taron Egerton (“Rocketman”)

Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”)

In a surprising state of affairs -- though not as surprising if you remember that SAG nominations often skew “earlier” buzz than what’s happening in December, Taron Egerton, Leo DiCaprio, and Christian Bale are all accounted for rather than later openings like Robert DeNiro, Adam Sandler. Netflix push Eddie Murphy also failed to win them over...

Soundtracking: Marriage Story

by Chris Feil

Noah Baumbach opens Marriage Story with the beginning thrums of Randy Newman’s fairy tale score set against a duet between its divorcing couple. As they list their affections, it’s almost like they could break into song. And eventually they will, but not until they are ready. Scarlett Johansson’s Nicole and Adam Driver’s Charlie won’t sing until they have been given the back-breaking gift of clarity, the kind of new beginning you can’t really get until the old you is burnt to the ground. Marriage Story presents their new outlook by making fresh use of two songs from one famous musical with its own musings on love and marriage, Stephen Sondheim’s Company.

Costume Designers Guild Nominations

by Murtada Elfadl

The costume guild nominations were announced today and some of the titles expected were indeed nominated. Ruth E Carter for Dolemite Is My Name, Arianne Phillis for Once Upon a Time….. In Hollywood and Julian Day in Rocketman. All in the Period Film category.

However, surprise no shows were The Irishman, Little Women, and Judy. Perhaps because it mainly has suits and no showy gowns and dresses, The Irishman was omitted. But then how do we explain them passing on Judy? After getting only 2 Golden Globe nominations does this spell doom for Little Women’s awards chances? Or has it started screening too late for this year’s earlier deadlines?
