Golden Horse Nominations for 2023

Snow in Midsummer, Marry My Dead Body, and Stonewalling are all up for Best Feature.

Nominations have been announced for the 60th annual Golden Horse Awards. The annual juried event covers the best in Chinese-language cinema. The ceremony will be held on November 25th this year. Stonewalling, Taiwan's Oscar submission Marry My Dead Body, Time Still Turns The Pages, Eye of the Storm, and Snow in Midsummer are all up for the top prize and three of them are streaming. What's the Best Concert Film?

With Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour coming to theaters today and Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé set to arrive in December, 2023 could signal the return of the concert film in full force. At the very least, both projects are bound to break records. Swift's movie is already on the way to becoming the most profitable concert film in history, close to surpassing Michael Jackson's This Is It just with advance ticket sales. Hopefully, this triumph will be reflected in the picture's quality, though, with such titles, success is measured more in terms of the artists' popularity than the piece's cinematic verve. Still, it'd be erroneous to dismiss concert films for this reason – there are many masterpieces to be found in the non-fiction subgenre.

International Submission List Updates

The submission list for Oscar's Best International Feature Film race is now 80 films long. What films will still pop up that we weren't warned about ahead of time? While the deadline to submit is over, there are usually 5-15 titles that are on the official list that weren't advertised ahead of time. Some countries that almost always submit that we haven't heard a peep about are Algeria, China, Lebanon, and Thailand. Nevertheless since I took a week off to vacation in Italy, seven more films were announced...
