TIFF 50: Finding hope in "The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo"

Gazes, whether averted or confrontational, flirtatiously elusive or probingly direct, have been one of the cornerstones of queer desire on screen. In the 21st century, the state of post-New Queer Cinema has only exulted their role, almost codifying certain gestures across a plurality of artistic expressions that may, otherwise, appear to have very little in common past their shared LGBTQ+ label. In this regard, it's almost inevitable to find a picture like Diego Céspedes' The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo. Chile's official submission for the 98th Academy Awards and this year's Un Certain Regard champion ruminates on the transgressive essence of a queer gaze, transforming it into a conduit of infection in what, at first glance, strikes the viewer as an allegory for the AIDS crisis. TIFF 50: Sweden's "Eagles of the Republic" and Taiwan's "Left-Handed Girl"

For the past three years, a big part of my TIFF journey has revolved around the Best International Film Oscar submissions. Although I try not to limit myself to award contenders when deciding what to watch and cover, this particular race is very close to my heart, often serving as a bridge between more mainstream audiences and the endless possibilities of world cinema. Earlier, I shared my thoughts on Norway's Sentimental Value, but today, it's time to examine that nation's Scandinavian neighbor, Sweden. And then, let's travel east, to Taiwan, where we find our most recent Oscar king producing, editing, and co-writing his longtime collaborator's solo directorial debut. TIFF 50: "Sentimental Value" falls victim to high expectations

To be loved so intensely, showered in adoration by a captive captivated crowd and the world beyond, can be as much of a curse as it is a blessing. Those who follow film festivals and the awards that come after are very familiar with such pitfalls. After all, who among us hasn't gone to the theater, hyped on months of exhaustive praise for a title that, when all is said and done, isn't as special as you thought it would be? Last year at TIFF, I wrote about my disappointment with Anora and loathing of Emilia Pérez, which was made worse by the reputation both films had accrued at Cannes and the palpable affection you could feel emanating from the Toronto crowd. 

This year, I come to you with a similar experience, another Cannes darling that failed to meet the high expectations placed upon it. Sorry, folks, but Joachim Trier's Sentimental Value left me cold…

International Oscar Update: A Boat Load of Official Contenders

We have now reached the season where it's hard to keep up with all the updates and it will keep on being this way throughout September. Nevertheless I'm at least keeping the submission charts up to date. At this writing twenty-five countries have selected their official contender for Best International Feature Film. We can safely expect another 60 or so countries to submit by the deadline of October 1. In terms of participation the category peaked at 97 contenders back in 2020 and has been dipping slightly since and has returned to 2010 numbers (the high 80s).

Intl' Oscar Updates: Austria, Ireland, Thailand, Etc...

It's your weekly Monday dose of Oscar news, subtitled division. Our official submission list is now 9 pictures long, 6 of which we've already discussed in previous posts. In regards to the "already featured" we now know that Germany decided among their finalists and went with Cannes hit Sound of Falling (reviewed by Elisa). We've also taken this opportunity to update the submission charts so they're now in full swing:

• Chart 1 Afghanistan to Guatemala -4 submissions and 2 in-process decisions
• Chart 2 Haiti to Nortway  -1 submission and 3 in-process decisions
• Chart 3 Palestine to Yemen -4 submissions and 4 in-process decisions
• Predictions - top 20 possibilities (official & otherwise)
