How many men from "Ted Lasso" can earn nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series?

In terms of precursors and returning nominees, we are flying blind with Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, which is exciting.

We only have one returning eligible performer this year (Kenan Thompson - Saturday Night Live). Both the SAG and Golden Globe Awards didn’t nominate a single eligible comedy supporting actor performance. Both went all-in on Schitt’s Creek and last year’s winner, Dan Levy. The Critics Choice TV Awards pointed out some dark horse favorites that could have a shot in this wide open category. However, this is a wide open category that will likely be a key place where new shows can demonstrate their strength and rack up nominations. Shows like Ted Lasso and The Flight Attendant could make a big splash here, or the Emmys could just nominate a majority of the Saturday Night Live cast.

The Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series race is going to get a shakeup. There are no previous winners who are eligible this year. Additionally, only one nominee from last year could return, as all other previous nominees are on hiatus or had their series end. Luckily, there are many buzzy new shows led by talented women who could fill this vacuum and make this once again a very competitive category. There’s also the potential for plenty of surprises from new streaming players and old network stalwarts.

So which new players can break in this year? Can shows that have been on for multiple seasons finally have a shot in this shortlist?

Emmy Watch: Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series

Our team is breaking down the top contenders in all the major Emmy races and highlighting some of our favorites over the next few weeks. Today, we’re looking at Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.

I was going into this category thinking that it might actually boast the highest percentage of possible returning nominees – a full 50% of last year’s slate, which in this crazy time is actually a lot. But Black Monday and its star Don Cheadle don’t appear to be eligible since they counted the four final episodes of season two, which aired last summer, last year, and even though the show returned a few weeks ago, there just aren’t enough installments for Showtime to bother to submit it (apparently). If it does somehow end up on the ballot, count Cheadle in again. The two surefire returning nominees are Anthony Anderson (Black-ish), vying for his seventh bid, and Michael Douglas (The Kominsky Method), set to earn his third and final nomination for this role. Emmy Watch: Will 'The Crown' or 'Handmaid's Tale' take up the majority of Drama Supporting Actress?

When the Emmys fall in love with a show, they really fall hard. Specifically, Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series can get filled with multiple nominees from a single show. For example, the final season of Game of Thrones in 2019 earned four nominations in this category alone (Gwendoline Christie, Lena Headey, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams). While that show is no longer on the air, The Handmaid’s Tale has also seen a large number of women nominated. Ann Dowd won the category in 2017 and the following women have been nominated for past seasons: Samira Wiley, Alexis Bledel and Yvonne Strahovski. Will The Handmaid’s Tale continue to dominate this category, or will another show, like The Crown, take up the most slots?

Emmy Watch: Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series

Our team is breaking down the top contenders in all the major races and highlighting some of our favorites over the next few weeks.

This category has, over the past few years, featured a wealth of contenders, including three nominees from a single show each of the past two years. Very few of those aired this past season, and in fact only two shows that have ever produced nominees in this category. Both The Handmaid’s Tale and This Is Us, which have fallen somewhat out of favor with Emmy voters compared to the warm welcome they both got at the beginnings of their runs, have a handful of contenders that could show up here, so let’s start with those and then examine the many new shows that could offer potential nominees…
