Tribeca 2022: B.J. Novak's "Vengeance"

by Jason Adams

Weirdly conservative and as profound as a midnight tweet-storm during a Dexedrine binge, I give you (no seriously, take it away from me) actor B.J. Novak’s writer/director debut Vengeance. This feels like a movie that Elon Musk will just absolutely adore... and please never defile my memory by thinking I mean that as a compliment. A wannabe Coens-esque satire of red-state/blue-state warfare and the champagne simps caught in the middle, Vengeance ultimately reads like a love letter to "Both Sides"-ism that ventures nothing so gains a great plains worth of nothing in bold-type return...

Category Analysis: Will sketch comedy prevail in Outstanding Guest Actress?

Team Experience will be taking a regular look at the episode submissions for major Emmy categories from now until the big night.

Former "Saturday Night Live" cast members Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig face off against each other in Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series.

by Christopher James

Sketch comedy thrives in the guest acting categories. While Saturday Night Live hosts have long been a staple of this category, HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show has recently had success here, too. Those two shows take up four of the six guest acting slots in the Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series category. The other two nominees are a famous actress in an underappreciated show (Bernadette Peters - Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist) and an underappreciated actress in an Emmy favorite (Jane Adams - Hacks).

In short, there are many ways the Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series category could go this year. With the Emmys, it’s always best to expect the unexpected. So who is most likely to win? Let’s dig into the nominees and their episode submissions...

Emmy Review: Lead Actress in a Comedy

By Abe Friedtanzer

I’m still sad that Elle Fanning isn’t here for The Great and I can’t understand how Better Things gets nothing but rave reviews and somehow Pamela Adlon isn’t nominated? That said, the list of actresses here is strong, And you'd think that previous winner Rachel Brosnahan would be the frontrunner with last year’s tough competition, victor Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) and six-time consecutive champ Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep) out of the way. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel may be the comedy nominations leader, but Brosnahan isn’t likely to eclipse Moira Rose.

I’ll try to avoid major plot details in my analysis – but if you’d like more spoiler-filled descriptions, click on the episode titles. Let’s consider each nominee…

Review: The Lovebirds

by Tony Ruggio

Michael Showalter’s follow-up to The Big Sick is both a wonderful showcase for its two stars, the whip-smart Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae, and a disappointing mismash of comedy and murder mystery. Though we know it was originally intended for theatrical release, the film continues a strange, disquieting trend of so-called “Netflix originals” which feel incomplete from a narrative standpoint.

Their four-year relationship on the skids, Jibran (Nanjiani) and Leilani (Rae) are on the verge of a bad break-up when they’re thrust into the middle of a conspiracy involving one dead bicyclist, a secret cult, and a sketchy self-proclaimed cop with a bushy mustache (Paul Sparks). With police on their tail, potentially marking them for vehicular manslaughter, the bickering couple sneak around New Orleans attempting to solve said mystery and dodge wealthy individuals who want them dead...

Who will win the Emmy for Leading Actress in a Comedy?

By Spencer Coile

After six consecutive years of Julia Louis-Dreyfus deservedly dominating this category for her performance on Veep, we finally have a race on our hands in the Lead Actress in a Comedy Series field! Or do we? As diverse as this lineup is – consisting of newcomers, veterans, and representation from six different networks – it feels as though Rachel Brosnahan’s name has been on that Emmy statue since the pilot for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel premiered last March. Is she going for the gold, or is the race more competitive than we think?
