Gotham Awards Revue: The Breakthrough Performer Category

First, I’m bummed I wasn’t able to see Preparation for the Next Life before this article was published. Hopefully the film and Sebiye Behtiyar’s performance will raise my baseline appreciation of the Gotham Awards’ choices even further. I also have no idea if anyone notably missed out, what with the Gotham’s broad eligibility requirements and my lack of awareness about this year’s major debuts. Miles Caton in Sinners, Cary Christopher in Weapons, and... I don’t know! With these caveats in mind, I still say they’ve kicked off the year with a solid Breakthrough Actor category.

All four of these performers help to serve and strengthen their films, and I look forward to seeing them again on the silver screen...

Eye Candy Predix Pt 2: Will "Wicked" be crowned again in Costume Design?

WICKED FOR GOOD

I cheered when Paul Tazewell won Best Costume Design and Nathan Crowley won Production Design for Wicked and yet I also felt a sense of dread. One of my great popculture fears in this franchise era is that the Oscars will one day lose their identity and become something akin to the Emmys with the same achievements winning again and again. Naturally then I'm excited to see new variations on the pinks and greens and golds and blacks of Wicked's color palette in Wicked For Good but also don't want to see it win back to back Oscars in the eye-candy categories, since it's essentially one long film, split into two. (It's the same reason I rolled my eyes that the Academy felt the need to nominate Stuart Craig and Stepheni McMillan for a full half of the Harry Potter franchise films even though their work was strong).

So what might oppose total Wicked dominance in the eye-candy categories come Oscar time?  Specifically costume design...

William Hurt (1950-2022)

Hurt as I remember him.

I read with total shock yesterday the news that William Hurt had passed away of cancer. There's something about growing up watching famous actors that ties your own ideas about time to their legacy, however loosely. When I heard the news I thought "Noooo he was so young!" before realizing that he was just shy of his 72nd birthday and not the handsome entirely fictional thin-haired 40something actor that I realized I pictured him as, a slightly aged version of his smoldering but callow young beauty, perhaps informed by the wearier sinister bald character actor of his later years. But William Hurt was actually 71 when cancer took him. So why had William Hurt become frozen in time for me? The answer lies not just in my own cinephilia but in the very distinct phases of his career...

Tuesday Top Ten: 1985 Favorites!

Because we'll be seeing what various cinephiles around the web think of Peter Weir's Witness for "Best Shot" tonight here's an entirely rando top ten list of 1985, direct from my brain. Or, rather, from web archives or my brain. Which means it's an unholy amalgam of things I loved when I was young and things I love now after many watches over the years and things I possibly would only love ironically now because I loved them when I was young.
