Awards Calendar 2022/2023

If you're eyes rolled when you saw this headline that means you still need more recovery time from the fiasco that was the 2021/2022 awards season. But time marches on and now we must draw our attention to the next wave of awards shows. We'll update this post periodically and republish.

APRIL 2022
28th Tony Eligibility Ends

If a show hasn't officially opened by this date, it's not eligible until 2023. The following shows are expected to be eligible: 13 original plays (Birthday Candles, Chicken & Biscuits, Clydes, Dana H, Hangmen, Is This a Room, The Lehman Trilogy, The Little Prince, The Minutes, Pass Over, POTUS or..., Skeleton Crew, Thoughts of a Colored Man), 7 play revivals (American Buffalo, For Colored Girls who..., How I Learned To Drive, Lackawanna Blues, Macbeth, The Skin of Our Teeth, Trouble in Mind), 7 original musicals (Diana, Flying Over Sunset, Girl from the North Country, MJ, Mr Saturday Night, Mrs Doubtfire, Six), and 4 musical revivals (Caroline or Change, Company, Funny Girl, The Music Man). It is our dream to one day get press invites to ample theater so we can do a once weekly column on that as a cultural sidebar.

MAY 2022
3rd Tony Award Nominations Announced
31st Emmy Eligibility Ends

The eligibilty period began on June 1st, 2021 (The debut seasons of Disney+'s Loki, Netflix's Sweet Tooth, Apple TV's Physical, AMC's Kevin Can F*** Himself, and Starz' Blindspotting and the second season of Hulu's Love Victor will thus be eligible despite feeling very 'old' by voting time) and ends on this date. If a show has aired enough episodes (six) to be considered a series by May 31st, 2022 its 'hanging episodes' (airing after this date but before the balloting ends in June) still count. The Emmys have fixed some of their rules so now if a film has qualified for the Oscars or has had a mass theatrical release (more than 70 theaters) on a single day, it is no longer eligible for the Emmy, so that should end the double-dipping that used to occur. More film festivals are now including TV programming but festival screenings do not interfere with Emmy eligibility...

Yes No Maybe So: Baz Luhrmann's 'ELVIS'

by Nathaniel R

Baz Luhrmann's career began explosively with two of the most endearing, unusual, and entertaining films of the 1990s (Strictly Ballroom and Romeo + Juliet). His promise as a Great Showman was realized with his masterpiece Moulin Rouge! (2001) which was only his third feature. Unfortunately in the 21 years since that very modern movie musical revitalized its genre, he mostly vanished from movie screens. He's made only two features since, the disjointed epic Australia (2008) and a box office hit adaptation of The Great Gatsby (2013). Nearly a full decade later we finally have a sixth feature. His latest, which was untitled long enough that its official title Elvis is hysterically anti-climactic, is a biopic of the rock n roll superstar. The movie hits theaters on June 24th, so let's break the trailer down with our Yes No Maybe So™ system...

The Piano Lesson - Let's keep this August Wilson ball rolling!

by Nathaniel R

Netflix announced yesterday that the next adaptation from August Wilson's Century Cycle will be his second Pulitzer winner The Piano Lesson. For those who thought Ma Rainey was way too stagey... well, you're not in luck! It's way too early to know how this will pan out given the pandemic and Broadway having been closed so long but this one is sticking even closer to the stage in a sense. The current plan is for Samuel L Jackson,  Danielle Brooks (yay!!!) and John David Washington to play the central roles (and uncle and his niece and nephew) in the Broadway revival in 2022 and then go directly into filming the movie version when they're done. Having seen Danielle Brooks on stage in The Color Purple trust that Orange is the New Black barely scratched the surface of what she can do so this is exciting news for her fans.

The play, which centers on the theme of family legacies, is about a brother and sister in conflict over what to do about a family heirloom which has been connected to the family since the days when their great grandparents were slaves...

Say No to the Blue Face - Jonathan Majors joins Ant-Man 3

by Ben Miller

Comic book movies can attract some high-class talent, and it looks like Lovecraft Country star Jonathan Majors is the latest to join the fray. Deadline is reporting Majors will join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man 3. The third installment of Marvel’s most light-hearted franchise isn’t expected to come out until 2022, but Majors will join Ant-Man vets Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly and Michael Douglas, alongside director Peyton Reed.  It is unknown whether TFE-pfavorite Michelle Pfeiffer will return...
