Meryl Streep is not a TV neophyte. She has appeared in two of what is now called a limited series, the first time at the beginning of her career in Holocaust (1978) and then in Mike Nichols’ adaptation of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America (2003), she won an Emmy each time. So it’s no surprise that she’s making another limited series, particularly in this era when they are so in vogue with movie stars. The surprise here is who she’s collaborating with; J J Abrams.
Sadly however it's not Felicity:The Later Years. The project is The Nix, an adaptation of the bestselling first novel by Nathan Hill about a woman who gets national press exposure for throwing rocks at a conservative governor on the presidential campaign trail. Sounds like it would be right in Meryl’s wheelhouse.
Meanwhile that proposed conversion of the last book of the Divergent series from film to TV hit a bump in the road...
Monday, April 13, 2015 at 9:40AM Manuel here, pretending he’s still part of the demographic for the MTV Movie Awards. Amy Schumer (“Half of you don’t know me and half of you think I’m Meghan Trainor” she quipped at the start of the show) hosted the show which might just as well have been called the “Shailene Woodley” awards. After Jennifer Lawrence and her Hunger Games dominated the past couple of years, unlikely movie star Woodley emerged as the clear winner last night. On top of her MTV Trailblazer award, her film The Fault in Our Stars (the first non-franchise film to win the Movie of the Year award since Wedding Crashers in 2006!) took home 3 awards. Indeed, original and non-franchise films pretty much dominated, even as the show seemed intent on reminding us that Furious 7, Avengers Age of Ultron and plenty more of summer sequels are out or on their way.
I wish I could find that J-Lo reaction to Schumer's Gone Girl/latina joke because it was EVERYTHING. Oh wait...
In other news, Bradley Cooper may be 3-for-0 at the Oscars, but he won “Best Male Performance” over presumed favorites Chris Pratt (whose Marvel film went empty-handed), and Faults own Ansel Egort, Meryl Streep won her very first popcorn award and Zac Efron won “Best Shirtless Performance” for his beautifully psychopathic performance in Neighbors which sounds about right, don’t you think?

Shailene breaking glass againWith the excruciatingly titled The Divergent Series Insurgent upon us -- and already garnering terrible reviews even before one of those shameless audience-hating cash-grab two-parters -- it's probably time to talk about the slightly mystifying rise of its leading lady Shailene Woodley. While she's certainly easy to look at (but aren't most actors?) that doesn't really explain the career. I've been mostly quiet about this because I'm aiming for positivity in 2015 but I believe I'm developing a severe allergy.

The Supporting Actress version was up briefly before being pulled so watch it while you can. Starring: Jennifer Aniston, Emily Blunt, Shailene Woodley, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Jessica Chastain.
They talk for about 10 minutes at the beginning about singing and musicals -- someone needs to cast Gugu in a traditional musical straightaway!
