Posterized: Jack O'Connell

In a curveball for "Posterized" which usually looks at major movie stars, let's talk about the 25 year old rising star, Jack O'Connell whose fame is entirely dwarfed by his co-stars (Julia Roberts & George Clooney) and his director (Jodie Foster) in this weekend's big release, Money Monster.

Though he's recently headlined a $100 million hit (Angelina Jolie's Unbroken), and two critically lauded indies (prison drama Starred Up & the wrenching nail-biter '71) he isn't exactly a household name. (I met him once at a party for Unbroken and while Angelina Jolie and some of his co-stars were holding court with well wishers he was keeping a low everyman profile near the bar -- you definitely wouldn't have recognized that he was the star of the picture -- but was friendly and humble about that big opportunity and showcase when approached.)

Cut to May 2016. With his new film opening, will people even know he's "that guy from Unbroken" when they catch him as the desperate threat crashing Clooney's finance show in the new thriller (see the trailer)? (Given how long O'Connell has been working overseas, breaking through as so many young Brits have on the television show Skins, perhaps it's a whole different fame ball game in the UK? UK readers will have to tell us.)

2014 European Film Awards Nominations

Manuel here bringing you some more awards talk from across the Atlantic. 

Ida, the nomination leader with 5 citationsTis the season for awards and so before we could even digest those British Independent Film Awards nominations, here come the European Film Awards to dole out their own. They bring great news to several Best Foreign Language Oscar hopefuls. Poland's Ida, Russia's Leviathan, Sweden's Force Majeure, Italy's Human Capital, Turkey's Winter Sleep, Austria's The Dark Valley, and Belgium's Two Days, One Night are all well represented. Take a look at the below-the-line categories and you'll find a number of welcome inclusions (one must give respect to any awards body which gives Mica Levi an award for his hauntingly discordant score for Under the Skin). Kudos to the TFE team who have reviewed all the films up for 2014 European Film.

Tribeca: Locked Up with Daddy Issues

Later this year, young British actor Jack O'Connell has the potential to breakout in a big way when he takes on the lead role as real-life hero Louis Zamperini in the Angelina Jolie directed Oscar-bait film, Unbroken. But before seeing him in the noble prestige film in December, O'Connell gets down and dirty in David Mackenzie's excellent prison drama Starred Up. Eric Love (O'Connell) is a 19-year-old inmate that despite his young age is such a violent threat that he has been 'starred up' to join older convicts in a high security adult penitentiary. O'Connell bites into the role, and quite literally - in an early tussle with the the guards he clamps down on one of their testicles. O'Connell makes his dangerous young prisoner unpredictable and unsettlingly charismatic.

Although we are never informed of what Eric has actually done to land him in prison, judging from the way he quickly acclimates himself in his new cell (fashioning a weapon out of the melted end of a toothbrush and the blade of his safety razor, knowing the perfect hiding place to store it when he needs it), it's not hard to imagine prison has already played a large part in shaping his young life. Perhaps his issues can be traced back to his own convict father? As fate would have it, Eric's new confines include none other than his fellow inmate, dear ol' dad, Neville (Aussie actor Ben Mendelsohn once again bringing nuance and complexity to the role of a volatile thug, as he did in both Animal Kingdom and The Place Beyond the Pines).
