The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus will always be known, perhaps primarily, as the movie interrupted by the tragic and sudden death of Heath Ledger (10 years ago today). This part of its reputation precedes it, particularly given its relatively muted critical reception. The story of its making, and the enlisting of Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell to fill the void, is essential to its reputation. It’s become a marker in time, an unplanned moment in the history of celebrity culture.
It is also, interestingly, a fairly specific moment in the development of visual effects. It lost the Best Production Design Oscar to Avatar, after all. These films stand for two dramatically different ways of using design and CGI to create cinematic worlds, even if they are both fantasies on the surface. And, perhaps, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus comes out ahead...
Thursday, December 6, 2012 at 12:21AM The Grammy Awards are not, as a general rule, anything that merits the attention of The Film Experience but it doesn't mean we can't discuss them briefly as an intermission between Oscariffic posting. Obviously I'm rooting for "Call Me Maybe" THE song of the year and indefatigably fun. And you already know that I wish Record of the Year Nominee "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" was the title of a movie.
But given this blog's metier, we have to focus on movie-related categories first and foremost.

I've never understood quite what people saw in The Descendants soundtrack (ooh, Hawaiian music. How obvious!) but I love the nomination for its fellow 2011 Best Picture nominee Midnight in Paris.
QUESTION: Will this be the only award outside of the Razzies that the Rock of Ages film adaptation receives?

Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at 11:57PM This week's top ten list is dedicated to James T, one of my fav readers and twitterers, who asked me some time ago to "pick song titles that you'd have liked to be the titles of movies that should exist." I couldn't resist the odd wildly random challenge and given that I recently hosted a karaoke party (don't ask) I'm in the mood. So here goes...This list was actually hard to make because so many songs -- even great ones -- have totally generic titles.
TEN SONGS TITLES THAT I TOTALLY WISH WERE MOVIES
Next year can we have Fiona Apple title all the movies that come out?

Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at 2:00PM Tom Waits still amazing after all these year.
We don't see Tom Waits in the movies as much as we did in the 90s but I did like his turn as the devil in The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. His next onscreen appearance is in Seven Psychopaths from the writer/director of In Bruges and co-stars Colin Farrel, Woody Harrelson, and Christopher Walken. (Pssst. I'm hearing good things about it, particularly Walken)
This gorgeous video is by the enduring illustrator/director/photographer Matt Mahurin. He's directed two full length features from what I can see (Feel in 2006 and Mugshot from 1996) neither of which I've ever heard of or received a release so perhaps his talents don't transfer to full length features? Still, I sometimes wish that other visual "visionaries" (like, oh say Tarsem Singh or Julie Taymor) were this focused. It's one amazing image after another in this video but the images are piggybacking and/or in communication with one another as they should be. It's all one cohesive ball of amazement instead of a series of "look what I can do!". If you're a young visionary watching, take notes!
