Curio: Viola and "Firsts" on Vanity Fair Covers

For this week's Curio let's talk the history of magazine covers rather than fan art.

Isn't the new Vanity Fair cover a beauty?! Viola Davis's profile has gotten a lot of attention but so has the fact that this is the first cover in VF's history to be shot by a black photographer. The name of that very talented man is Dario Calmese and he's previously shot George MacKay and Billy Porter for the magazine.

There's a lot of outrage online: how can this be the first after 100 years? Because we grew up as magazine junkies (before the internet *gasp*) this factoid is interesting and indeed outrageous but also a bit misleading. We'll talk about that in a hot second but first let's focus on the beauty and power of VIOLA DAVIS who we're so proud to have been stanning right here since 2002 when we gave her a gold medal in our annual awards six years before the world at large caught on. Our awards were only celebrating their 3rd birthday then.

How time flies. Now she's a superstar and who is more deserving? No one...

Almost There: Viola Davis in "Widows"

Last week, Nick Taylor wrote a beautiful piece about the early days of Viola Davis' screen career, specifically her tryptic of stellar supporting performances in 2002. The article highlights the actress's formidable talent for creating full characterizations with minimal screen time, how she conjures rich humanity from people on the margins of the story, imbuing every glance and spoken word with mountains of meaning. After reading that, I felt compelled to revisit some of the actress's best works and, here we are, exploring the only time Viola Davis was legitimately in contention for an Oscar nomination and missed. 2002: Viola Davis' breakthrough year in cinema

TFE likes to focus on a film year in the buildup to the Smackdown. For the first half of June that's 2002.

There’s always something novel about seeing a current megastar at the beginning of their career. Who was this person before they became who they are now? How does their early work fit into their current persona? Can we catch a glimpse of the brilliant career that’s coming?

A solid example of this kind of retrospective would be the pretty good year Viola Davis had in 2002. She had appeared in small roles in six films before then but had yet to capture public attention on the screen. Fresh off her first Tony win in 2001 for King Hedley II, that began to change. In 2002 she had noteworthy supporting roles in three major films from high-profile directors, each operating in vastly different genres and released in the key November-December awards slot.

Her most high profile role that year was as Julianne Moore’s housekeeper in Todd Haynes’ Far From Heaven, still the best film Davis has appeared in...

Celebrity IOU: Brad, Melissa, and Viola.

And now for something completely different.  Not sure how many folks have caught it yet, but a few weeks ago, HGTV, center of home improvement and home selling shows, launched a new program called Celebrity IOU.  The concept is that a famous person treats a loved one to a home/property makeover, working in conjunction with the network’s twin “Property Brothers” Jonathan and Drew Scott.

Renée Zellweger is SAG's Favorite Film Actress

Last night's win by Renée Zellweger for her performance in Judy marks her third individual SAG award. She has won previously for Chicago (2002) and Cold Mountain (2003). On the film side she matches Daniel Day Lewis as the two most lauded actors by the Screen Actors Guild. Day Lewis won his awards for Gangs of New York (2002), There Will Be Blood (2007) and Lincoln (2012).

There are five other actresses who are right behind Zellweger with two individual film awards. And none of them are called Meryl Streep. Steeep has two as well though one is for TV. She won for Doubt (2008) and Angels in America (2003). These are the actresses who could match or leapfrog Zellweger soon...
