Red Carpet Lineup: Golden Globe Gowns

Jose here. Even though Cate Blanchett was in New York City on Sunday for the opening night of The Present, which marks her Broadway debut, the Golden Globes red carpet still found a way to happen (she was still Best Dressed person in the world that night).

No specific trends dominated the evening - other than strangely enough, long sheer sleeves as seen in Nicole’s harlequinesque McQueen gown, and one or two cases of pale dresses washing out the paler skin of their wearer - and everyone did their best to look as glamorous as possible. In fact it was hard to single out complete disasters other than once again, poor Nicole, who gets points for always being adventurous and who I know will make it up to us by looking astonishing at the Oscars, and SJP who also always tries hard to make a statement through fashion.

Now onto the 10 Best Golden Globe Looks

10. Natalie Portman in Prada
When you’re playing one of the world’s most beloved fashion icons, why would you bother paying homage to anyone else? Portman’s nod to Jackie O wasn’t surprising or groundbreaking, but it certainly paid off. The color and retro appliqués are bold and unforgettable, and the fit is rather lovely. Instead of looking like what we think of as maternity fashion, it’s truly a regal look.

9. Drew Barrymore in Monique Lhuillier
Stealing the boho chic thunder from Sienna Miller, Drew Barrymore’s winged gown made me wish I could be her date to all the afterparties. Her relaxed hair and makeup scream “I can do Coachella and the Globes without changing” and for that I applaud her.

8. Hailee Steinfeld in Vera Wang
Somehow Hailee made her sheer sleeves work, and her lavender Vera Wang seems like a fairy tale princess’ dream look come to life. Sexy without being too revealing, the dress announces her as a future couture maven.

7. Emma Stone in Valentino

6. Isabelle Huppert in Armani Privé
Skipping her beloved black tuxes, Golden Globe winner Huppert was a vision of effortless European charm. You could think she just picked this on her way out the door, or that she worked with a team to put the look together for days. The truth is when I saw her look so breathtakingly simple on the red carpet I reacted like she did when she won.

5. Evan Rachel Wood in Altuzarra
Huppert skipped the tuxes, but Westworld star Evan Rachel Wood decided to show little girls don’t need dresses in a stunning custom design by Altuzarra. One can only wonder how many Kinsey scale numbers shifted after she made her appearance on the red carpet.

4. Brie Larson in Rodarte
*insert tear emoji*
After my complaints about her lackluster hair last season, Brie Larson had me grinning from pure joy by showing up with this delicious Veronica Lake inspired look. The cut and color of the dress are fantastic, but OMG her hair, those waves, that color -- Brava Brie!

3. Naomie Harris in Armani
If Natalie went for Jackie, Naomie was pure Marilyn in this va-va-voom Armani column. Happy birthday Mr. President to all of us!

2. Ruth Negga in Louis Vuitton
As if sent from the future to combat red carpet dullness, the stunning Ruth Negga went with a metallic Louis Vuitton design inspired by Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. Kudos for always finding a way to highlight her otherworldly facial features, she never allows what she wears to steal the attention from that face.

1. Blake Lively in Versace
Blake Lively continues to be one of the only celebrities who can make Versace look sexy and elegant at the same time. Her simple black gown makes one think of classic screen sirens like Rita Hayworth and Ava Gardner, but the magic is in her choice of accessories, her emerald bracelets, and gold pockets which enliven (no pun intended) what could’ve been a so-so look.

My favourite one was Olivia Culpo. The dress was art (Klimt) and folklore (Mexico) and a stunner at the same time.

I like all these looks except Hailee's lavender mistake. Brie and Naomie and Kristen Bell were probably my top 3.

January 10, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterCash

All of these are pretty, but I don't like Blake Lively sticking her hands into those silly pockets. Is she about to pick up a hot tray of cookies from the stove? And something about her seems very Nomie in Showgirls. Dirty. I can't quite put my finger on it.

January 10, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJennifer Garner

I was waiting for your write-up, I always love reading them! My favorites were Natalie, Annette (so elegant), Issa Rae (loved how unexpectedly modest she looked, and the white was a great contrast with her dark skin), and Amy Adams (her hair and makeup looked great with her sleek gown).

Jose -- SO pleased you finally are giving Brie Larson props. She looked magnificent. If this had only been her Oscar winning look!

But i think i would have had Evan Rachel Wood or Ruth Negga at #1

Jennifer -- love it. Nomi 4ever.

Luis -- i am currently googling that. dont remember it.

Janelle Monáe was best dressed.

January 10, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterRoger

My favorite was Evan Rachel Wood--wow! She looked gorgeous. Runners up for me, in order, were Emma Stone, Ruth Negga, and Brie Larson.

January 10, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJoe

Janelle Monae, Viola (that colour, so simple, so effortless) and Annette Bening (pure elegance!) are missing. Not such a big fan of Blake Lively's - those pockets are weird.

I couldn't with Emma Stone - she looks so washed out and tired in that dress, it was pretty but she suits bold and daring colours.

Worst dressed? Octavia Spencer, Anna Kendrick (what was she thinking!) and Anna Chlumsky - who puts that on and thinks it looks good?

January 10, 2017 | Unregistered Commentermorganb

Brie Larson, Naomie Harris, and Janelle Monáe were my favorites, though now that you've made me think about it, I like Portman's look too. Lively's look isn't to my taste, but I totally get what you're saying about her being 2017's Ava Gardner, and the world could certainly use more of that.

January 10, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterScottC

Really didn't like Hailee in this dress.. she is so thin but around the waist it added way too much to her hips

Although I thought Emma looked okay, and Isabelle looked great, I would replace those three with

Olivia Culpo = magic
Issa Rae = goddess
Janelle Monae = fun

January 10, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJoey

Evan Rachel Wood
Huppert
Portman

Kristen Bell looked stunning, but not sure if it was the dress or her make-up/hair team. Either way she was the best she's ever looked.

Olivia Culpo would probably be my best dressed, too.

Natalie's dress looks exactly like something Erin created on the recent season on Project Runway.

Each and every cutaway upper arm/shoulder bearing look with ridiculous forearm coverings was HEINOUS. I don't know if I've ever hated a red carpet trend more. Usually the designer groupthink produces something worth looking at.

SJP, Barrymore, Steinfeld, Kidman, Vergara all did it. Just awful. I hope it's gone by the Oscars but I suspect we'll see more.

January 10, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterHayden W.

^^^This.

As Tom & Lorenzon said (of Kidman): "Tragic drag."

Lily Collins was a lovely shade o pink in tt frothy confection n Bening is old Hollywood elegance in tt shimnering number. They shld in top ten too.

I thot Lively n Stone's dresses r blah. The former lookef so matronly n the latter washed out!

Best dressed imo r Larson's gorgeous sweetheart sexy number n Wood's cool Dietrich tux

Huppert was also effortlessly tres chic in tt simple get uo!

January 10, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterClaran

Evan in the tux. She just schooled everyone in that it's cool for ladies to be in a tux.

January 10, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterSteven

I must have gone over the deep end because I honestly loved Nicole's McQueen. The sleeves were wonky but I was feeling the overall look. Not her best McQueen outing (that would go to last year's Darth Vader's mistress realness from the Met Ball) but I found it oddly fetching.

Best dressed to me was Olivia Culpo because that was a LOOK but bonus points to Brie Larson for somehow, against all odds, getting a simple and pretty dress from RODARTE. Rodarte has been batshit for years.

January 10, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterDerreck.

Riley Keough is just stunning at the Globes. Effortless flapper chic.
As long as taking a risk goes, I actually like Kidman way better than SJP's disaster.
Huppert slays all day long!

January 10, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterCraver

I liked the 1920s art styles of Drew, Ruth, Annette, and Riley Keough.

I liked the simple elegance of Viola, Amy, Brie, Reese, Naomie, and Sarah Paulson.

And I like just pretty too, like Lily Collins and Chrissy Teigan.

And high style but they can make it look good, of Janelle Monae and Naomi Campbell.

And for looking absolutely at ease with what they were wearing, Isabelle Huppert, Judith Light, and Evan Rachel Wood. Wood really knew how to create the perfect silhouette.

Michelle Williams.

January 10, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterbrandz

Apologies for the brag but I saw The Present's opening night (yes, skipped the Globes for the theatre) and let me say Blanchett is a BEAST. Never seen a performer like her onstage before. Simply unreal.

January 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterCharles O

Annette just stole the show!

January 11, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterstjeans

I don't think Blake's pockets are real and they look rather silly. And I think she did not look really comftable with a lot of posing in this manner.

January 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterChinoiserie

Ruth Negga, natch.

But shout out to Kristen Wiig. That hair *heart eyes emoji*

January 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJB

The Bening was serving all u gurls regal old Hollywood glamour, baby! There was no one else there in the room (give or take Ruth Negga ... "otherworldly" describes her look perfectly).

January 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterDorian

I guess mad geniuses like Meryl don't give a shit what they look like. It's like she made that dress in community art class or something. Sad.

January 11, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterWes S.

i liked Chrissy from "This is Us" ! Yes - Meryl has hideous personal tastes in clothing.
