Happy 73rd to Shelley Duvall

We spent most of today's psychic energy reminiscing about James Caan's greatness , plotting what to see this weekend at the theater (maybe Elvis again?), and being reminded about the terrible 1994 Best Actress race when Jamie Lee Curtis was RIGHT THERE. So we almost forgot it was Shelley Duvall's birthday, one of the most singular actresses to ever grace the silver screen. So...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SHELLEY DUVALL, WHEREVER YOU ARE.

Here at TFE, Cláudio has paid tribute to her all time best performance (3 Women) and Jason has celebrated her most famous (The Shining) but I realized I haven't really written about her. If you could read a piece on Duvall that wasn't about those two movies, which performance would you want it to be about?

James Caan (1940-2022)

Oscar nominated screen legend James Caan died yesterday evening at the age of 82. The news came via his official twitter account. His uncommonly masculine star persona was often deployed for menace but his charisma read 'leading man' even though that mode happened less often. His career was marked by stratospheric highs, major lows, and some degree of ambivalence; He regularly turned down roles (including several that became iconic for his peers) in both movies and on television. He's best remembered today primarily for two pieces of art, the gangster epic The Godfather (1972) and the fan/artist thriller Misery (1990). They don't paint the whole picture of that expansive career though which began in the early the early Sixties and and will stretch into next year. He completed one picture, set for 2023, a darkly comic crime/action movie starring Pierce Brosnan (with Caan playing his mob boss) based on the novel Gun Monkeys. He also did some filming for a sheriff role in a crime drama called Redemption though we don't know if he had completed his work there.

Almost There: Jamie Lee Curtis in "True Lies"

When announcing his honors for the year's first half, Nathaniel cited Jamie Lee Curtis among his Supporting Actress favorites. If Everything Everywhere All At Once keeps its buzz going into the awards season properly, we might see Curtis among this year's Oscar contenders. This Hollywood princess turned erstwhile scream queen has had a storied career full of outstanding performances, and it's about time the Academy pays her respect. Maybe the reason for her nomination-less state is that Curtis' best work tends to happen when she's playing in genre pictures – comedy, action, and horror. Such is the case of 1994's True Lies, a James Cameron-helmed action-comedy for which the actress got some buzz.

As we wait to see how Curtis' new Oscar hopes pan out, let's look back to the 90s and re-examine the actress' take on the character of Helen Tasker…

Doc Corner: Sundance Winner 'Fire of Love'

There are three big reasons to see Fire of Love, preferably on the big screen if possible. The third I will get to later, but the first is the story. That of a couple who found themselves through the admittedly rather niche field of volcanology. There’s is one of mutual respect and adoration that I admired also for how much faith they granted the public to understand their world. You certainly don’t see that every day.

The second is the archive footage that makes up the entirety of its runtime. It’s a beauty and a truly wonderous, jaw-dropping visual spectacle.
