Bo Burnham's 'Inside' is going to cinemas this week (so let's rank the songs)

By Glenn Dunks

Was Promising Young Woman your first interaction with Bo Burnham, playing the too-good-to-be-true doctor? Was it his directorial debut Eighth Grade with its acute insight into social media culture of young adults? Or was it maybe his career as a stand-up comedian, a sort of Weird Al Yankovich for the millennial age? Maybe it was Inside, Burnham’s quarantine inspired one-man musical Inside, which is now receiving a one-night only screening in theatres across the United States on the July the 22nd.

I have watched the Netflix special several times already, as well as multiple trips to its various musical sequences while the soundtrack remains on constant repeat. I think it’s brilliant for all the reasons Cláudio explained (and more). A true swing-for-the-fences achievement that makes elaborate use of its lo-fi trappings, straddling a delicate line between sarcastic mockery of cultural taboos and politically aware understanding of the times that are indeed changing.

Inside became instantly famous for a lot of reasons, landing six Emmy nominations despite being released on the very last day of eligibility. So to celebrate its brief detour to theatres, I am going to rank all 20 songs that appear in it! Keeping in mind, of course, that there isn’t a single dud out of the bunch.

Gay Best Friend: Christian (Justin Walker) in "Clueless" (1995)

A series by Christopher James looking at the 'Gay Best Friend' trope

You had me at "nice stems."Clueless is a perfect movie. The more time passes, the more the film is solidified as a bona fide classic.  Writer/director Amy Heckerling turns Jane Austen’s Emma into an addictive and heartfelt tale of high school relationships and finding one’s impact on the world around them. Alicia Silverstone’s Cher is a pitch perfect heroine whose big heart is only outmatched by the size of her closet. Heckerling’s loving wit doesn’t just apply to our leading lady. The entire high school is filled with big personalities (and bigger wallets). One of my favorite characters has always been Christian (Justin Walker), an old soul who becomes the first (and likely not last) gay man that Cher falls for.

While mostly a supporting player, Christian isn’t solely defined by his sexuality. He gets to be a fully rounded connoisseur who seamlessly moves from a romantic interest to a gay best friend...

What did you see this week?

Been back to the movie theaters yet? We've been going regularly again (huzzah!) but this week we skipped the new releases and took in a special one-night screening of The Graduate (1967) for the Movies with MZS at IFC Center. Next month he's showing Body Heat (1981) which is so perfect (you know we're fans) so if you're in NYC and you've never seen it now is your chance to see Kathleen Turner's jaw-dropping debut on the big screen.

Anyway. Here is the chart. What did you see this past week/weekend?

Vintage '98

The Smackdown of '98 (with special guests) arrives in just one week. Before we get to the main event let's just soak in that year a bit. Were you old enough to be conscious of pop culture in that year? If so, nostalgia warning. If not, here's what people were talking about before your time.

Great Big Box Office Hits: Titanic (1997) reigned long into 1998 as the then the biggest hit of all time. In fact it didn't fully cede the #1 of the weekend placement from Christmas '97 through Easter of '98. What's more it didn't leave the top ten box office chart until JUNE. That kind of run is unthinkable now. But the biggest hits released in the actual calendar year of 1998 were...
