Sundance Review: The Climb

by Murtada Elfadl

The Climb starts with a literal climb. Best friends Kyle (Kyle Marvin) and Mike (Michael Angelo Covino) are biking somewhere in France, up a mountain talking about Kyle impending nuptials where Mike is going to be the best man. The scene builds up as they bike up and ends with the revelation that Mike slept with Kyle's fiancée. The deadpan way Covina reveals that and the funny yet completely heartbreaking way Marvin reacts sets the tone for this abrasive comedy of male friendship...

Jessica Chastain is Tammy Faye...

by Eric Blume

It's never a bad time to start talking about possiblities for NEXT YEAR's Best Actress Oscar, which may include one of our favorites here at TFE, Jessica Chastain.  She just wrapped filming The Eyes of Tammy Faye, where she will play infamous televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker, opposite Andrew Garfield as husband Jim. The movie is based from the documentary of the same title from twenty years ago, here directed by the talented Michael Showalter (The Big Sick and Hello, My Name is Doris).

Seems like inspired casting and an inspired choice for director, since the movie could really deliver in several different tones based on this trio.  What it probably won't be, let's hope, is another straight biopic...

The Miraculous Power of a Perfect Montage

by Cláudio Alves

Sometimes you can forget why you love cinema so much. The world gets you down and it's like nothing can bring you up to the light, rolling clouds of cinematic mediocrity make it even difficult to remember there was a light to start with. Before you know it, going to the movies is more like a chore than a pleasure. If you give in to despondency, those belabored affirmations of the death of cinema may start to ring true. But are they?

No. We know this because even in the darkest times, there are small miracles that prove cinema is alive and thriving. Parasite is one of those miracles.

Fellini @ 100: "Amarcord"

A few volunteers from Team Experience are revisiting Federico Fellini classics for his centennial. Here's Eric Blume...

Federico Fellini’s 1975 film Amarcord is considered the culmination of his style and artistry, the “most Fellini” of Fellini films, the one that won him his last (of four) Best Foreign Film Oscar, as well as prizes from the New York Film Critics and National Board of Review as director of the year.  And he never made a film afterwards that rivaled its success or connection with audiences...

a sweet 16 days till Oscar

We're just two weeks away and some change!  Since 16 is the magic number of the day, here are some memorable 16-related happenings at the Oscars.

Raiders of the Lost Ark was John Williams 16th nomination (out of 52!). Can you believe he lost for that adventure? Well, yes, because Chariots of Fire took Best Picture and that also had an instantly hooky score.

The 2016 Best Picture announcement (‘La La Land”... whoops, sorry, Moonlight’) will surely go down in history as one of the most memorable Oscar night moments ever.
