Icelandic Cinema a new website offers on demand Icelandic classics like the Viking epic The Raven Flies and Noi the Albino. They also have free downloads of short films.
Cinema Blend ARGH. The televisionization of the movies continues. Turns out that Snow White and the Huntsman -- the one with Kristen Stewart and Thor -- now thinks it needs three movies to tell its story. In the past few years I have come to respect television more than I used to but they are two different artforms. Why this constant push to make them the same? It's so disheartening. There is much to be said for stories with beginnings middles and ends which you can absorb in one two hour sitting.
Grant Land interesting take on the lack of male movie stars and the real and manufactured cases of Will Smith and Ryan Reynolds. Very sports-analogy filled for those of you who are into that.
The Many Faces of... Leonardo DiCaprio "how to freak out and go crazy!" (as Jorge pointed out to me this is kind of a sequel or a spiritual cousin to my "dead wives club" and so I just love it.

Hey, it's Ellen Page. What About "Freeheld"?

Is Zimbio trying to tell us something with that headline? I don't know why the actresses are hanging out in Montreal together but it's adorbs that they have matching pants and shoes. Clea's mostly been doing TV guest spots lately (The Event, CSI: Miami). Meanwhile Ellen Page heads off to Rome soon to join the huge ensemble of Woody Allen's Bop DeCameron (2012). 

But hey... FREEHELD. That previously announced movie popped right into my head.

Unfortunately there's been very little word on what's happening with Ellen's most-promising sounding future film. Freeheld would be the story of New Jersey mechanic Stacie Andree's (Page) and her girlfriend Laurel Hester's (as yet uncast) legal battle to save pension benefits when Laurel was diagnosed with a terminal illness. It sounds like such a promising direction for Ellen (Oscar nom #2?) who should challenge herself as an actress real soon; It's not like expository roles in green screen epics are pushing her gift.

Freeheld (2007), Best Documentary Short WinnerThe documentary short Freeheld, which first told this story, won an Oscar three years ago. And given the hot topic of gay marriage (just passed in New York but New Jersey's Republican governor vows to fight against it.) the time seems ripe for more social dramas that passionately deal with contemporary fights. I don't know about you but I firmly believe that the reason the whole subgenre of films dealing with social issues, civil rights, and prejudice have such a middlebrow rep and always feel safe and weaksauce is because, generally speaking, they set them so far back in the past that they're all cushioned from the world as we know it. Hollywood needs to deliver more Do The Right Things and less Driving Miss Daisys, is the point even though that reference itself is itself cushioned with rosy nostalgia. Oops!

The starry gay dramas that do get made (Milk, Brokeback Mountain) are also set in the past. Not that we don't need the reminders but contemporary balance would be great. Catherine Hardwicke (Red Riding Hood) was originally attached to Freeheld but it doesn't have to be her. Actually, and though it pains me to say this since I was a huge fan of her debut thirteen (2003), it might be better if it wasn't her. Somebody needs to is the point.

Ally Sheedy "We Were Under the Radar"

Gay pride week here in New York City has been eventful to say the least (see previous post) and the parade today was fun. But I thought what you'd most be interested in, given The Film Experience's leanings (actressexual), was a shared moment with Ally Sheedy!

I was on the guest list for Kiehl's Pride Party which was hosted by Dan Savage and his boyfriend Terry Miller of the awesome "It Gets Better" project (Can someone give them a Nobel Peace Prize already?). And so, to my utter delight, was Ally Sheedy. I had to reach out to her as she passed by me to tell her how much I loved her in High Art (1998). Once she'd stopped to chat, me being me, I had to then tell her I was rooting for her to win the Oscar but then she wasn't even nominated. Unspeakable Tragedy! Immediately after blurting that out, I worried I'd poured salt onto an old wound but instead she was all smiles, thank yous and bygones "We were under the radar!" she said cheerfully. We then swapped "Isn't Patty Clarkson awesome?" notes and to my surprise Ally introduced me to her lovely daughter. How is Ally Sheedy old enough to have a 17 year old daughter?!?  

I brought along my friend Jon and we're pictured to your left with Kenneth in the (212) who offers up an amusing rundown of the event and a rather skewed version of my chat with Ally Sheedy ;)  It's not that I don't love The Breakfast Club, trust! I just wanted to use the few seconds I had with her to talk about more pressing matters. And Oscar is always the most pressing matter, don't you agree?

In addition to a great crowd, the event featured gourmet cups of macaroni & cheese (4 or 5 different flavors. Don't confuse me with options) which everyone tried to pretend they weren't into. Everyone pretended badly.

I mean, who knew? Madonna votes on Oscars?!? They haven't even deigned her worthy of Best Song nominations even though she totally has been.

Cineuropa I hadn't been following the Cloud Atlas screen adaptation story but talk about complicated. It's got three directors: Germany's Tom Tykwer, Andy Wachowski and Lana Wachowski (of The Matrix fame though I wish they were more thought of as the Bound duo); four Oscar winners: Berry, Broadbent, Hanks and Sarandon; six different stories all set in different eras with the actors playing multiple characters.
Wesley Morris if you're looking for a surprisingly strong defense of Cars 2. I love Wesley but Cars 2? Blech.
Everything I Know... reviews the stage to screen concert of Company with Neil Patrick Harris
