Film Review: 'Minions: The Rise of Gru' Delivers More of the Same

Everyone knows what their mileage is on Minions mischief. Since exploding onto the screen in 2010’s surprise animated hit Despicable Me, these goofy yellow helpers have become part of popular culture. Like demented, individualistic oompa loompas, the Minions do not need speech in order to win over their audiences. In fact, they hew closest to the Three Stooges in terms of their appeal. It’s pure physical comedy amped up by the frenetic dexterity that animation allows.

The newest entry, Minions: The Rise of Gru, doesn’t reinvent the wheel, to say the least. It’s broad, loud and frantic, barely stopping for a minute to craft a story. At 107 minutes, the energy sputters out, particularly in a rushed third act. Yet, the movie gives exactly what it promises, a fun ride full of antics galore...

THE BOB’S BURGERS MOVIE
I was perplexed about how to talk about this movie as a longtime passionate fan of Bob's Burgers. On the one hand it was as enjoyable as any episode of the show and it was great to spend time with the Belcher family again. On the other, when I went to write a proper review of it a few days after the screening, I couldn't remember any of the specific jokes beyond the perpetual tease about whether Louise might lose her bunny ears...

Tribeca: Sigourney Weaver Sells 'The Good House'

Film protagonists struggling with alcoholism dates back to the early days of cinema. While treatments, support groups, and the drinking age may have changed over the past century, the difficulty of needing that drink has not. It's interesting to see how films choose to portray such a common subject. The Good House, premiering at Tribeca ahead of a theatrical release this fall, definitely opens with a lighthearted approach.

Tribeca 2022: A Lesbian Jehovah’s Witness Romance in ‘You Can Live Forever’

Religions, as institutions, don't often make space for new ideas or changingn times. This includes LGBTQ+ people whose existence is essentially prohibited in the most literal and unimaginative readings of biblical texts. While there are more religious communities these days that are open and accepting, merging faith with a celebration differences, that is sadly not the general case. You Can Live Forever is set within the world of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, where scripture is quoted often and two women being together isn’t a concept that would ever be considered.

The new film from the co-written and co-directed by Sarah Watts and Mark Slutsky, follows a girl named Jaime (Anwen O’Driscoll), who has been sent to live with her aunt and uncle after the death of her father. At church she meets Marike (June Laporte), and a passionate romance soon develops between the two...
