Lunchtime Poll: "Marriage Story" custody battles

Bear with us through today's lunchtime poll which is NOT about whose side Marriage Story takes (the hot takes are abundant online and it's exhausting) but about which side you'd take --not Nicole's or Charlies -- this Q takes a second to get your head around but it's fun and totally worth asking for those of us who live for the movies:

If you had to divorce Marriage Story, what part of the movie would you want custody of ?

We couldn't help but ask Team Experience this question too so there answers are after the jump to get your started...

Singular Style: Laura Dern in "Marriage Story"

by Cláudio Alves

Some films have overtly brilliant costume design with sprawling wardrobes that call attention to their magnificence at every turn. Others shine in less showy ways, sometimes withholding their potential for sartorial spectacle until the right moment. A stylish coat can alter the way we look at a character. A bold pop of color can transform a scene's emotional tonalities. A singular stylistic choice can make all the difference.

Marriage Story is a good example of this sort of costume design. Mark Bridges isn't unfamiliar with epic feats of costumery but he knows when to hold back and sacrifice aesthetic splendor for the sake of character building. When it comes to Laura Dern's Nora, a savvy L.A. lawyer, his work gets a bit showier. This is a woman who knows her looks can be a weapon, even in a world of grumpy judges and boring office meetings. It's only sensible that her costumes are more attention-grabbing than the other characters' outfits…

First Round Critics Orgs: NYFCO & AFCC

by Nathaniel R

With 3 critics groups announcing thus far, Laura Dern is the only threepeat winner.

NYFCC was the prestige kick off of this portion of precursor season (critics groups) a few days back and their rivals on the West Coast (LAFCA) announce tomorrow. But in the meantime we've also had announcements from New York (Online) and Atlanta, both of which went wild for Parasite. Side note: Yes we know there've been other group announcements but we dont acknowledge the nominations portion that so many groups are doing now because it just makes the overabundance of small regional organizations feel even more desperately extra. If just announcing winners is good enough for NYFCC/LAFCA/NSFC, the holy trinity of critics prizes, it ought to be good enough for smaller cities and less prestigious orgs.

Here are the winners for New York Online and Atlanta...

'Marriage Story' Wins the Night at the Gotham Awards

by Murtada Elfadl

Marriage Story, Noah Baumbach’s LA has nothing on New York except space divorce story, fittingly dominated the Gotham Awards last night. It won every award it was nominated for - feature, screenplay, actor - plus the audience award. Awkwafina won best actress for The Farewell over Indie Spirit nominees Alfre Woodard, Mary Kay Place and Elisabeth Moss. She is not nominated for the LA counterpart to the Gothams. We doubt they’ll fall for Baumbach as hard as the New Yorkers did. They’ve seen the film and know which city he prefers.

Tributes were given to Laura Dern, Sam Rockwell, Ava DuVernay and producer Glen Basner. Baumbach and his partner Greta Gerwig came out in Raf Simmons designed sweaters adorned with Dern pictures to present her award.

Here is the evening’s full list of winners...

Index (59 minutes)

• 00:01 Ford v Ferrari, Christian Bale, impressive crafts, and Oscar talk
• 19:06 Marriage Story, the opening scene, comparisons to Kramer vs Kramer, and more. Plus a lot of love for the actors including Alan Alda.
• 36:05 Honey Boy a Shia Labeouf's confessional with a great Noah Jupe directed by Alma Har'el. But, we confess we have Lucas Hedges fatigue.
• 47:10 Best Costume Design. We're rooting for extreme longshot Hustlers but we survey the whole field.

You can listen to the podcast here at the bottom of the post or download from iTunes. Continue the conversations in the comments, won't you?
