Link what you made me do

Cartoon Brew it turns out the new animated film Leap is actually a previously internationally released animated film named Ballerina, reworked by the Weinsteins for the US with a new voice cast. The difference: the reviews are terrible this time
Variety Orland Bloom to star in and produce an urban fantasy series called Carnival Row which has humans and mythological species interacting (sounds a smidge like the new Will Smith project Bright)
The Guardian James Cameron interview on Terminator 2. But the part that's getting quoted is his dismissal of Wonder Woman (though he says he enjoyed it)
Variety... but naturally Patty Jenkins has fired back

IndieWire lots of female directors hitting the festivals this year. Here's a list of 20
Nerdist we haven't heard anything about that ill-advised movie remake of The Birds (1963) in a while. But now there's news that another adaptation of the source novella is aiming to be a dramatic BBC miniseries
Mental Floss extensive piece on the costumes of Game of Thrones
Boy Culture Jay Thomas of Mork and Mindy and Murphy Brown fame has died of cancer
/Film casting for the live action version of Teen Titans (which will just be called Titans) has begun with Anna Diop nabbing the Firestar role.
/Film The best recent Asian action movies you probably haven't seen
Like Hacker Movie Pass is suddenly seeing a huge influx of subscribers. You guys I love the service so much. If you don't have it you really should get it. It saves you so much money if you like seeing movies regularly.

OffScreen
The Atlantic interesting piece on Taylor Swift's persona-shifting new single "Look What You Made Me Do"
The Stage Stephen Sondheim on what directors should and shouldn't do when restaging musicals
The New Yorker read this brilliant piece, please... "Louise Linton isn't mad. You're mad."

Ever wonder what it would be like to hang out with Madonna for a whole day on your birthday? Dennis Hensley enlisted his comedienne friend Nadya Ginsburg to play her all day and find out. "C'mon" hit play. Ginsburg is a brilliant Madonna impersonator and proves it again.

link to the feeling

• Film Doctor UK good interview with a action film storyboard artist
• IndieWire David Ehrlich makes a great case that Oscar needs to change their rules about Original Song. "Cut to the Feeling" from Leap is not eligible (incidentally for the same reason "Come What May" wasn't eligible... originally written for something else and then unused for that something else)
• Variety Morgan Freeman will be this year's SAG Lifetime Achievement Recipient
• NYT and LAT remember the career of movie & television star Jerry Lewis (RIP)

• AV Club more drama for that Han Solo movie. Michael K Williams, currently Emmy nominated for The Night Of, has had his entire part cut out.
Deadline another new role for Roland Møller (in the action film Skyscraper). The Danish actor is hot hot hot after Land of Mine. You'll understand if you've seen that Oscar nominated picture
The Guardian we're promised a definitive victor in the forthcoming action film Godzilla vs Kong. But either way audiences probably lose.

TV
• Variety the annual survey of who makes what per episode of hit TV shows. Casts of Big Bang Theory, Game of Thrones, Modern Family, and Robert DeNiro (in a new series) are swimming in money. Cast of This is Us will surely eventually be but not quite yet.
• Out RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars season 3 is a go... and already filming!
• Variety Peak TV still hasn't peaked. At least in terms of quantity. One executive predicts 534 new series next year so you're not just imagining that it's impossible to keep up
• Coming Soon 'everything we know about Star Trek Discovery'... though can someone explain to me the deal with this. I keep hearing that it'll be on Netflix and that Netflix is distributing. Yet often times and sometimes even in the same single paragraph in various articles it will say "exclusively on CBS All Access" so I'm confused. Anyone?

Justice Link

Boy Culture want to see a web or tv series sequel to Boy Culture  (2006)?
Film School Rejects a new short film starring Oscar Isaac available to watch online
Deadline a huge list of in-development franchises - what's the next big sci-fi fantasy hit?
Coming Soon Nicholas Hoult is in talks to play the Lord of the Rings author JRR Tolkien in a forthcoming biopic. Those unfamiliar with Tolkien but for book jacket photos, Hoult seems like odd casting but the movie will be about his youth and service in World War I (which of course informed his iconic books)

AV Club Raising Arizona was on the cover of a Serbian biology textbook!
/Film Wonder Woman 2 is aiming for a December 2019 release date. Patty Jenkins still not confirmed to return as director
MNPP has a new crush in François Arnaud
Towleroad Ezra Miller kisses a male fan at Comic Con. Crowd goes wild
Ceros why are directors like Christopher Nolan enamored with 70 mm?
Variety Producer vows to "vigorously defend" Feud: Bette and Joan from Olivia de Havilland's lawsuit. But they might not want to harp on and on about "meticulously researched" since we spotted several errors without doing any research at all!
/Film contrary to reports Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) will not be appearing in Avengers: Infinity War

A Detour to the Stage
Playbill in an upcoming revival of Stephen Sondheim's masterpiece (well, one of them) Company, the genders will be reversed
Playbill Kathleen Turner's speaking voice is, of course, legendary but now comes word that she's going to sing on stage!!! What? She's debuting a cabaret show "Finding My Voice" in Philadelphia
Broadway Blog Mandy Patinkin is taking over the lead male role in Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 on Broadway for 3 weeks only. MANDY PATINKIN.

The Big Link

What happened these past two weeks that I need to know about? We haven't done a link roundup yet this month (due to the critics institute retreat I was attending) so I have no idea what happened in my absence. But let us not get further behind. Herewith some news stories as well as a few random good reads.

News

• IndieWire Sofia Coppola responds to the backlash regarding her adaptation decisions on The Beguiled
• Theater Mania Josh Lucas and Uma Thurman to star in a new Broadway political play opening this fall The Parisian Woman
Audra McDonald is going on a North American tour so get your tickets! The six time Tony winner's voice is utterly sublime.

The Link Where It Happens

Link love time.

Vulture Michelle Pfeiffer's ten essential roles
Prizeo Lin-Manuel Miranda offers up the chance to win VIP tickets and a meet and greet at the opening night of Hamilton in Los Angeles with a donation to "Immigrants Get the Job Done Coalition". (And FYI two former Tony nominees Joshua Henry as Aaron Burr and Rory O'Malley as King George are in the company)
Vanity Fair on how difficult it is to get a gay film made in today's Hollywood. The headline to this is a bit misleading since it's like "in a post-Moonlight world" but let's be reasonable. Moonlight only made its dent a handful of months back. So most of the films cited didn't have Moonlight to point to when seeking financing

• THR More dirt on what happened behind the scenes on the troubled Han Solo movie
• Nerdist Why Megara is the MVP of Disney's Hercules
Playbill The glorious Audra McDonald finally makes her West End debut, no big deal after 6 Tony Awards, reprising her Tony winning / Emmy nominated  Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill Billie Holiday role
Buzzfeed the hardest game of 'would you rather' with hot cartoon dudes. I don't know. Most of these were easy for me but your mileage may vary.
Variety offers up a franchise report card on the various series that are taking up so much of Hollywood's time and capital. But shouldn't Bond and Tarzan have been included in this roundup?
Decider lists the '20 best foreign films on Netflix'... though the list would have been more exciting had they editorialized rather than just pulling the RT scores to determine which 20 to feature
MNPP pic of the day with Edgar Wright at a Baby Driver screening

Check out this glorious montage of NYC (hat tip to Gothamist) as seen through the movies.

New York in Cinema - Supercut from Sergio Rojo on Vimeo.

God, I love living here. And one of my fav things in movies is city street scenes where the main character is just part of a huge walking crowd (the most classic visual example being Tootsie I think). How many movies did you instantly recognize?
