Weekend Box Office: Elvis, Crawdads, Mrs Harris, and more...

by Nathaniel R

Despite a steep drop in sales Thor Love and Thunder held the top spot over the weekend;  A nearly 70% drop from mountains of gold still means you're raking it in! Thor was also the only wide release to hold on to all of its theaters since the studios actually released new movies this weekend (GASP) with Where the Crawdads Sing (which did well), Mrs Harris Goes to Paris, and Paws of Fury all arriving in wide release and aiming for different audiences. With Elvis, Minions, and Top Gun still attracting moviegoers, there was really something for everyone at the multiplexes. We need more lineups like that if moviegoing is ever going to be healthy again, regardless of the wildly varying quality of the 10 films in wide release.

Stage Door: "The Minutes" by Tracy Letts

'Stage Door' is our new theater column. Because this is a film site, each column ends with related movie suggestions for those who don't have access to live theater. - Editor

Mayor (Tracy Letts) and a new city councilman (Noah Reid) make small talk early in "The Minutes"

Even if you don't attend live-theater, you're probably fond of Tracy Letts. He pops up as recurring characters on acclaimed TV shows (Homeland, Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty) and is one of Hollywood's most reliable character actors in prestige flicks like Ford Vs Ferrari, The Big Short, Little Women, and Lady Bird  (for which he should have been Oscar-nominated). His talents don't end there. Unfair as it may be, some people are great at everything. In addition to being a terrific actor, theatergoers know him as a prolific Tony and Pulitzer-winning playwright. His ninth original play, The Minutes, concludes its Broadway run this coming Sunday so you have one week left to see it...

2022 Chita Rivera Winners

We told you back in May that the Chita Rivera Awards, which hadn't been held since 2019, would be back for 2022. The nominations were a mix of both the 2020 and 2022 Broadway seasons as well as the 2021 film year. In short, COVID-19 really did a number on all awards shows, no matter how niche! After the jump the winners (and nominees) of this prize honoring dancers and choreographers in movies and on stage.

Julianne Moore to preside over the competition jury at Venice

by Nathaniel R

Exciting news to report. Julianne Moore, who originally inspired my own career writing about film and thus this website, will lead the jury at the 79th annual Venice International Film Festival. The festival runs August 31st-September 10th so expect lots of Julianne gowns this summer. What a nice full circle monent this will be for the Oscar winning actress. She's a previous winner of the Volpi Cup for Best Actress for Far From Heaven (2002) and this year she'll help determine who wins that same prize twenty years later. Penélope Cruz took the prize last season for her work in Pedro Almodóvar's Parallel Mothers which helped pave the way to her fourth Oscar nomination...
