Almost There: Meg Ryan in "When Harry Met Sally..."

by Cláudio Alves

Last week, we examined a Christmas movie performance that came close to Oscar glory to celebrate the holidays. Now that we're coming to the end of this cursed 2020, it seems appropriate to choose a New Year's Eve film. When it came time to pick such a picture, my mind immediately went to f Rob Reiner's 1989 When Harry Met Sally…, a perfect rom-com whose Nora Ephron-penned screenplay earned a much-deserved Academy Award nomination. Our focus shall be on the Sally of the title, Meg Ryan giving a comedienne's masterclass…

Relatable words from Diane Kruger

from Diane's instagram

I’m SO OVER this f......g YEAR ! Let’s SHAKE IT OFF already 🤯

What she said. So um... Happy New Year's Eve everyone. Party responsiby if you're partying which is to say, only with your immediate "bubble" whose respiratory droplets you've been inhaling for... um... 9 whole months now.  2020 is almost over. We're also putting on a face mask to shake off dead skin cells with it.

More film critic prizes: Chicago, Indiana, GWNYC

by Nathaniel R

With over 30 critics groups now in the US (and *still* literally more each year) and many of them now doing two rounds of announcements we don't give everyone two posts or even one here at TFE (we need time to actually write about movies!) but we do like to check in once in a while. Chloe Zhao continues to be a literal sweeper in Best Director (with no one else ever winning) while Maria Bakalova continues to dominate in Supporting Actress though some, including the upcoming Golden Globe Awards argue it's a leading role.

Here's a few more prizes, the most famous being the Chicago Film Critics Association...

Showbiz History: Three celebrity weddings and a biopic suggestion

4 things that happened on this day, December 31st, in showbiz history

1992 Czechoslovakia is peacefully dissolved and the Czech Republic and Slovakia both emerge from the split. Which means, for our purposes here at TFE that they started all new Oscar submission histories ;) Czechoslovakia had had six Oscar nominations and two wins from 23 submissions the bulk of which were in Czech (though one of their winners, The Shop on Main Street was Slovakian). Interestingly enough just after the split in 1993 only Slovakia submitted to the Oscars while the Czech Republic took a year off. The Czech Repubic has since won one Oscar (Kolya) and had two additional nominations (Divided We Fall and Zelary) and a finalist (The Painted Bird last season). The Czech submission this year is Charlatan. Slovakia has yet to be nominated though they have a Holocaust drama this year, The Auschwitz Report...

Year in Review: Best Onscreen Chemistry of 2020

by Team Experience

Chemistry may be something you can predict in a lab but in showbiz it's always been volatile, elevating some projects to unpredictable heights and dooming others with its absence or withholding or misdirections. Strong onscreen chemistry may be far less rare than capturing lightning in a bottle but it can feel just as miraculous. In the studio system they'd seize on any great example and repurpose it by ordering additional pairings of the stars involved. Modern Hollywood executive (and the stars themselves to some degree) have been notoriously dumb about capitalizing on incredible partnerships. This has made great onscreen chemistry basically a one & done phenomenon for the most part for decades... and thus all the more ephemeral and precious. So let's celebrate it.

We polled Team Experience on "best screen chemistry of 2020" and pooled the results. Sound off with your own in the comments...
