TIFF: Shekhar Kapur’s ‘What’s Love Got to Do with It’

It’s fun to see a director known for a particular kind of film try something new. At the premiere for his film What’s Love Got To Do With It, Shekhar Kapur, best known for Elizabeth, joked about how he responded to being told that he doesn’t do rom-coms: “Watch me.” His latest is a joyous celebration of culture and heritage and the way they can serve to both unite and divide, offering many genuine laughs and some heartfelt commentary on what it means to stay true to family…

Finland submits "Girl Picture" (ihana!) and other Oscar news

You all know that we here at TFE are huge fans of Girl Picture and today comes news that Finland has chosen it as their Oscar submission. While we wish its US release had been noisier (it was still playing in NYC last week) we've talked it up to everyone we know and all of you of course. "Barbarian" opens well while the nation waits for fall film season

The nation's taste for horror just won't quit as Barbarian takes the top spot in its first weekend. Pair that with the superhero genre and it feels like maybe... just maybe (theorizing incoming) everyone feels both scared and powerless so horror is cathartic and superheroes are prime aspirational escapism. If this theory is accurate it doesnt say great things about the shape of the world right now! Bollywood picture Brahmastra Part One also opened well though the violent period drama Medieval couldn't drum up interest. Anyway the charts...
