Best Actor & Best Actress: An Uncommon Pair

by Eurocheese

Chadwick & Viola at odds in "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" -- but will they be even at the Oscars?

It’s been over 20 years since we last saw a film take home Best Actor and Best Actress on the same night. While these categories are both very competitive this season, there is a possibility that Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom could combine Boseman’s posthumous career-best performance with Davis’ flashy titular role to make it happen again.

But how often have we seen this combination in the past, and under what circumstances? Let’s take a look…

All Oscar Charts have been updated!

All the Oscar charts are updated four days before the Spirit Award nominations are announced and about two weeks before the biggies (Globes and SAG) potentially throw everything into disarray by playing favourites and telling other films to get lost. We're now worried we're underestimating multiple films since lately the Oscar voters have been geting lazy and giving 10+ nominations to multiple films... and we don't have any film doing that kind of numbers this year. We might be overestimating Mank and underestimating Da 5 Bloods. Some films still feel like they could either settle for disappointing 1 or 2 nods or become formidable contenders like, say, Promising Young Woman, First Cow, and Minari.

Oscar Charts - All acting categories two weeks before Globe & SAG nods

by Nathaniel R

Zendaya smiling because the camera is absolutely besotted with her.

As strange as it is to note, it's still worth reiterating that Academy voters don't begin to fill out their nomination ballots for another five and a half weeks (!!!) A lot of things can change in that long of a stretch of time. Films and performances can move in or out of favor in two weeks time, let alone five!  But here is where our crystal ball is right now...

"Da 5 Bloods" leads the Online Film Critics Society nominations... but fails to win

The Online Film Critics Society, founded in 1997 back when there was still a noticeable divide between print and web (there's zero difference anymore... it's only size and reputation of outlets since everything is online) have announced their nominations for the film year. They'll announce their winners on January 25th at which point we'll update this post. But for now the nominations and a few comments...

ICYMI - The Goya Nominations & Winners

by Nathaniel R

In case you missed them... and you might have because we forgot to share them, let's talk about the annual Goya Awards honoring Spanish cinema. Last season Pedro Almodóvar and Antonio Banderas's most recent collaboration Pain & Glory was the champ. To honor the 2020 film year, Banderas himself will direct and present the live-streamed ceremony in March 2021. This year the Africa-set drama Adú which is currently streaming on Netflix, and the girls school drama SchoolGirls lead the nominations with 14 and 9 nominations respectively.  UPDATE 3/ 8: Schoolgirls (or The Girls) took the top prize at the ceremony but it tied Adú in wins with 4 each. Coven (also known as Akelarre) won the most trophies with 5 craft wins.

The nominees and winners for the 35th annual Goyas and a few notes are after the jump...
