Emmys Review: Animated Program

by Christopher James

It’s the old guard versus the “new” wave of Netflix animation. I use “new” in quotes because there’s nothing “new” about Bojack Horseman or Big Mouth, except that the Emmys finally noticed them just last year. Can they win on their second try at the Emmys?

All three of their challengers have won before. Rick and Morty won its sole bid for Outstanding Animated Program in 2018. Meanwhile, Bob’s Burgers has consistently earned nominations for every year since its second season, winning in 2014 and 2017. And never count out the most senior show in a lineup. The Simpsons won this category last year, its first win since 2008. In total, the legendary comedy has been nominated twenty-seven times in this category, winning twelve of those competitions.

Since this is a tight race, it may come down to episode submission. Let’s take a look at the field:

Emmy Review: Supporting Actress, Limited Series / Movie

By Juan Carlos Ojano

Leading up to the nominations, much of the discussion surrounding this category is about how many and who among the Mrs. America stars would get in. It says a lot when Emmy favorite Sarah Paulson and previous nominees Elizabeth Banks and Rose Byrne could not even score a nomination, despite prominent roles in the show. Outside of that limited series Patti LuPone, Rosie O’Donnell, Cherry Jones, and Winona Ryder were just some of the names floated leading up to the nominations announcement that didn't . Without any further ado, let’s review the performances that were nominated...

Emmy Review: Supporting Actor in a Limited Series/Movie

by Juan Carlos Ojano

Months after Emmy nominations were announced and this list still puzzles me. That is not a comment on the quality of the performances, but more on the road leading up to these nominations. Three nominations for Watchmen and none for the wildly predicted Tim Blake Nelson? Two Hollywood actors got in but not Broadway legend Joe Mantello? Previous Emmy winners and nominees John Slattery, John Turturro, and Ray Romano also missed mentions. With Unorthodox’s relative overperformance, I would not have been shocked if Amit Rahav made it in. Instead, we have a group of nominees with no clear frontrunner...

Emmy Review: Supporting Actor in a Comedy

Please welcome new contributor Christopher James to continue our Emmy analysis/review...

The new eight-wide field Supporting Actor in a Comedy field brought in some old and new faces. The incumbent Tony Shalhoub hopes to win his fifth Emmy (he won three times for Monk and once previously for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel). However, there are plenty of people standing in his way. Both Harper and Levy contend for their show’s series finales. Oscar winners Ali and Arkin hope to add an Emmy to their respective trophy cases. Meanwhile, Emmy regulars Brown, Braugher and Thompson are hoping to be the David to Shalhoub’s Goliath.

Without further ado, let’s dive into a look at each of the nominee’s submissions (mild spoilers to come)...

Emmy Review: Supporting Actress in a Comedy

by Nathaniel R

I chose to cover this category because I hadn't seen ANY of the submitted episodes. I'm never up to date on TV so figured it would be a fun way to sample while also facing the fact that I'll never catch up given that there's always more new stuff to watch so I'm just jumping ahead to 2020 and moving on. I will say that ranking these choices through episode submissions alone was a much different experience than I was expecting in terms of personal favourites versus rank. All eight nominees considered at the jump...
