Gosling and Chazelle to Reunite on the Moon

Chris here. It's that time of the Oscar season where we are starting to hear about the major contenders next projects, and here's one that reunites two major forces behind the frontrunner. Ryan Gosling has already danced among the stars for director Damien Chazelle, and now he'll be launched back into them as Neil Armstrong for First Man.

From James Hansen's biography of the same name, the film will be adapted by Spotlight's Oscar winning cowriter Josh Singer and follow the story of the historic moon landing. The project had originally been developed by Clint Eastwood, but Chazelle is an incredibly more interesting and less expected choice for the project. This would be quite the about face from the jazz-focused La La Land and Whiplash, so we'll be curious to see the results whether or not he becomes the youngest ever Oscar-winning director this year.

Will this be one small step for Chazelle or a giant leap for Gosling?

A "Blade Runner 2049" Teaser is Here!

Chris here. Denis Villeneive has scored his biggest box office hit with Arrival (it's inching close to $100M) but he could score an even bigger hit next year with Blade Runner 2049. The sequel is bound to spur steady curiosity and shrieks of sacrilege from the original's faithful over the next year, but Villeneuve should be the force that unites both factions. And to ease (or maybe exacerbate) those thoughts, we have our first look at the visuals with the just released teaser! We'll save the full YNMS for a more revealing trailer, but I have some thoughts...

  • That's a lot of voiceover for a teensy trailer. Uh oh, did they not learn from the original's struggles?
  • Denis Villeneuve and Roger Deakins, reunited and it feels so good.
  • Ryan Gosling gives good coat. With all that mood and stoicism, this teaser plays like Only God Forgives but, you know, not terrible.
  • We see you on that piano, Ryan. La La Land crossover fanfiction!
  • With these mostly dusty hues, it's a relief to know that this might be a decades late sequel that doesn't borrow too much from its original, no?
  • Deckard seems to have gone all McMansion while in hiding. Maybe Sean Young is lurking somewhere after all.

What do you think of this first look?

The Oscar Week

In this weekly feature from Murtada we will follow the Oscar contenders and examine how their many interviews and appearances impact their chances. This week we check in with Ryan Gosling, Viola Davis, Pedro Almodovar and Annette Bening.

Ryan Gosling

Gosling is trying to catch up with co-star Emma Stone who’s been promoting La La Land while he was away shooting Blade Runner 2049. He also trying to catch up with Casey Affleck and Denzel washington who’ve established themselves as the frontrunners in Best Actor. Last week he got his hands and footprints immortalized. This week he gets his first solo magazine cover - he's been in a couple with Stone - of the season in GQ. Gosling thinks the his appeal and the popularity of the Hey Girl meme are because … he’s Canadian?

La La Land's Soundtrack and "City of Stars"

Chris here. Rejoice musical lovers - we can finally hear a full number from La La Land! The complete soundtrack drops December 9 when the film opens in limited release, so those clammoring to hear the full version of Emma Stone's potential Oscar moment "Audition" will still have to wait. We've heard a glimpse of "City of Stars" in the film's first teaser many months ago, but here is Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in full glory:

This year's Best Song race is potentially one of the most heated in many years with La La Land's tunes likely going head-to-head against Lin-Manuel Miranda's chance at EGOTing for Moana. It could make for one of the starriest lineups in some time with pop stars like Sia, Alicia Keys, and Justin Timberlake as possible performers/nominees. Let's just hope the ceremony doesn't shove off their lesser known nominees again this year!

What original songs are you rooting for?
