Cannes Days 7-8: "The Beguiled" and "Rodin"

Another day in May, more cheers and jeers for the competition films. Only five competition films are yet to screen: Fatih Akin's In the Fade (starring Diane Kruger), Good Time from the Safdie brothers, Sergei Loznita's A Gentle Creature, François Ozon's L'Amant Double  (with two of his favorites Marine Vacth and Jérémie Renier), and Lynne Ramsay's You Were Never Really Here (starring Joaquin Phoenix).

PreviouslyDay 1Days 2-4, and Days 5-6
And Don't Miss: Nicole in Cannes Pt 1 and Pt 2

So it looks like the frontrunners for the Palme d'Or, barring any of those five landing in a major way, are France's 120 Battements Par Minute, Sweden's The Square, or Russia's Loveless. But with Cannes and the mysteries of the group dynamics of juries, you never really know until the awards are announced. Pundits always forget that. People who assume that the Palme is a given for ___ are wrong nearly every year. That's half the fun.

Day 8 brings us one of the longshot possibilities for the Palme from the great Sofia Coppola...

Everything's Coming Up Kiki

By Spencer Coile

For many of us Kirsten Dunst fans, her performance in the second season of Fargo was a peak in and of itself. She had turned in exquisite performances in the past like Melancholia, but a collaboration with Noah Hawley in the Fargo universe was a different step in Dunst's career. Her Peggy Blumquist picked up rave reviews, and awards nomination, and she ended the year as part of the winning SAG ensemble of Hidden Figures. Now it would appear that 2017 will continue on with more beguiling Dunst projects as if the comeback has only just begun...

Bask in the Glow of "The Beguiled" Poster

Chris here. Like I'm sure many of you will relate, Sofia Coppola's The Beguiled is among my most anticipated of the Cannes lineup. The festival kicks off this coming Wednesday, but we'll have to wait for these repressed southern ladies until the back half of the festival according to the just released festival schedule. Cry not, readers, because we'll be hearing about Todd Haynes's Wonderstruck right out of the gate.

Also to dry your tears is a brand new poster in all its gauzy glory to knock you sideways - literally:

Exit Videos
We're just under a year away from the debut of the superhero TV series Cloak & Dagger but they've released a trailer anyway. Seems kinda early!

We've already covered The Beguiled teaser but here's the full trailer (which is very similar in structure but with extra footage). Having seen the 1971 film I wasn't worried about spoilers but you absolutely shouldn't watch this if you haven't seen the original film. For my taste it's a little too revealing.

Cannes Line Up

by Nathaniel R

The Cannes lineup was announced very early this morning (time differences, don'cha know) and we're here to give you details, not just film titles. While TFE doesn't attend ($) we do follow from afar and hope to make the trek some day. The 70th Annual Cannes Film Festival runs May 17th through May 28th.

OPENING NIGHT

Which is a high profile gig but also risky as the knives are often out for a sacrifice to the festival gods to launch the cinextravaganza.

Ismael’s Ghosts (Arnaud Desplechin)
French auteur Desplechin's latest will be released in the US by Magnolia. It stars French A-Listers Marion Cotillard, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Mathieu Amalric, and Louis Garrel and revolves around a filmmaker (Amalric) working on a new picture when his long dead lover Carlotta (Cotillard) returns to life sending his life into a tailspin. If you've never seen Desplechin classics Kings and Queen (2004) and A Christmas Tale (2008) get right to that!
