Reader of the Day: Victor

Reader Appreciation Month wraps on Thursday but I hope y'all know The Film Experience appreciates you year round. We'll have Weekly Reader Spotlights for April because I'm having too much fun with it to quit at the moment. Today Victor in Brazil.

Nathaniel: Do you remember your first movie?
VICTOR: First moviegoing experience I actually recall - my mother told she had taken me before, but I don't remember - is Aladdin, when I was 8.  I really think it kind of had some deep effect in me, because if there are two things that I love they're musicals and animated films. I still know the lyrics of almost every song in in Portuguese and in English.

I can sing The Little Mermaid in Norwegian and English, so I feel you.
I grew up with the Disney musicals from the late 80's and early 90's. But First Movie Obsession, with capital M and O, was Moulin Rouge!. And that led me to The Film Experience.

Yes, we were all "Truth, Freedom, Beauty, but above all things Love" CRAZY for awhile there with that Bazmark classic. What's an Oscar injustice topic that gets you riled up?
Where can I start.... in general, I kind of hate every single Oscar that comes with "SORRY, YOU ARE GREAT AND WE ARE LATE!" written on the plaque, because every Oscar given as a career achievement award or a "sorry, you lost last year" award just increases the problem. Its like a freaking logarithmic progression, because every time they award someone for the wrong reasons (every reason other than "best perfomance") they make the situation 10, 100, 900, 3000, 50000 times worst.
It always comes back to certain years, right?
Giving Nicole the Oscar in 2002 for The Hours, because they liked her so much in Moulin Rouge!, makes Julianne Moore a loser for the crown jewel of her career. And Renee Zellweger, who lost in 2001 and 2002 and was snubbed in 2000, who we liked so much in Bridget Jones and Chicago, just shows up in 2003, gives the worst supporting performance of the year (or maybe the decade, or maybe ever?) and walks away with an Oscar just because she lost. See how it grow exponentially worst? 
The math is perplexing, I'll grant you that.
Did Jessica Lange really won her 2 Oscars for Tootsie and Blue Sky, or did she win for Tootsie because she couldn't win for Frances and won for Blue Sky because she had lost several times and they didn't want to give a 3rd one to Jodie Foster in less than 10 years, before she was even 35. I could give you a hundred examples.
It is perplexing math, always snowballing. What does your moviegoing diet consists of these days: theater? dvd?
Theater not so much, because its wasteland season in Brazil; the Oscar movies have come, gone and I've seen then all and the summer movies haven't arrived yet. Right now in Brazil, the biggest hit in theaters is called Bruna Surfistinha, the story of a middle class girl that becomes a low rate hooker, than a high rate hooker who blogs about her "job" and latter publishes a book, her memoirs of her life as a former prostitute. NO THANK YOU! - but I have to admit, i read the book.
So nowadays I'm most on a DVD diet. Recently bought and still sealed, all on the line to be rewatched: The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Rose, Some Like it Hot, All About Eve (special edition), Moulin Rouge! (definitive edition), Nightmare Before Christmas, Death Becomes Her, Dogville, American History X and Beauty and the Beast (special edition with soundtrack!).
You're quite the collector. Okay. Five movies you think ought to be required viewing for all people of the Earth. Go!
Five. Just Five? I'll go by genre, ok. Musical: Cabaret; Comedy: Some Like it Hot; Drama: Sunset Blvd. ; Horror: Rosemary's Baby; Biopic: Amadeus. Sorry, really sorry to leave you out: Michael Nichols combo Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?/The Graduate and my beloved Moulin Rouge!

Warren Beatty wins Dick Tracy rights lawsuit. Y'all know I love my Beatty but this decision seems ridiculous to me since the rights were only supposed to stay with Beatty if he was actually using the character but he NEVER WORKS. I would love for him to act again but it is obviously not a top priority for him.
Cinema Blend
the absurd Face/Off duo (I like that movie) Nicolas Cage and John Travolta may reunite onscreen. May not. The crystal ball is cloudy.
Basket of Kisses Mad Men rumors continue.

Cinema Blend also reports that Josh Hutcherson auditioned yesterday for that Hunger Games role he wants so badly. If you ask me he's already doomed despite fans of the property thinking he's right for it. He seems so much younger than Jennifer Lawrence, doesn't he? And isn't it a love interest situation? The woman reading older is anathema to Hollywood. They are so weird about needing their women much younger than their men.

Oh and P.S. have you seen his "straight but not narrow" campaign? Cute.



Time Out Chicago Melissa Leo interview on a new project which I shan't name anymore -- I've given it too much free promotion. Must control myself unless I'm invited to things and can weigh in with an informed opinion -- but this bit on the Oscars made me giggle.

TimeOut: I was surprised myself by the backlash. Isn’t the awards season all about self-promotion?
MELISSA LEO: Perhaps that’s very so. [Laughs]

The Man With the Italian Tattoo

Williams and MagnaniJose here, to continue celebrating the centennial of American playwright and icon Tennessee Williams.

Williams grew up watching movies. He was one of the major playwrights who learned his craft, not through Shakespeare and Moliere but through the works of De Mille and Chaplin. This can easily be seen in the way his works lack the naturalism of "the theater" and their reality is more grounded on high drama, film noir and even slapstick. You can almost picture the young Williams sitting inside a dark movie theater, enthralled by the images projected on the screen (makes a case for why some of his characters are usually described as "larger than life" huh?).

During one of his many movie adventures, Tennessee spotted Anna Magnani. I like to assume it was Rome, Open City, but of course am probably wrong.

He became so obsessed with the Italian diva that he ended up writing an entire play just for her: The Rose Tattoo. When he approached her to play the leading role of Italian widow, Serafina Delle Rose, Magnani declined because she was unsure her limited English skills would do justice to the play. (Maureen Stapleton did the role on Broadway instead, winning the Tony in 1951.)

This didn't stop Tennessee and Anna from starting a friendship that would endure until their deaths. Williams described Magnani, 

 I never saw a more beautiful woman, with such big eyes and skin like Devonshire soap.  

The temperamental Magnani felt at home with Tennessee and when the time came to take The Rose Tattoo to the movies, she obliged. 

She took on the role of Serafina with such intensity and passion that she ended up taking home the Oscar for Best Actress. She didn't attend the ceremony because she thought she would lose, even after she'd won the critics' awards, the Golden Globe and BAFTA for the role.

The film might not be counted as one of the strongest Williams' adaptations (and the play itself is often regarded as a minor work) and in the years that followed, the movie earned a reputation for being full of stereotypes and even for discriminating against Italian immigrants.

Sure, the film is filled with symbols, bare chested lovers (Burt Lancaster mostly), weeping, screaming, gossiping neighbors, Virgin Marys (and nods to virginity), wine, loud laughing fits and thick accents but few back then realized that the film wasn't being touted as a portal into reality. It was an interpretation of the immigrant experience by someone whose knowledge consisted mostly of neorealist films.

More than this, the movie was a tribute to Anna Magnani. Not the Magnani Williams came to know later, but the Magnani who embodied a nation in the aftermath of WWII. The one Williams had met at the movies.

The Rose Tattoo therefore, is less about the characters than about what inspired their creation. The play is filled with nods to Williams' own life and the motifs that would define his work (sex, passion, humid settings, dead men...) The very tattoo in the title can mean much more than the ideas associated with the flower (love for example) since Rose was the name of Tennessee Williams' favorite sister. I'm sure she accompanied him to see Magnani's films on many occassions... 

Therefore, we understand that the role of Williams in the play is that of the tattoo artist, imprinting precious memories on the skin of his characters and his audience. But above all, imprinting them onto his own creative skin. Some works of art are misunderstood because the are too personal and deciphering their meaning only leads to migraines and shouts of "pretentious".

The Rose Tattoo would be one of these works; so private, so intimate; that we carry them around with us all the time, waiting only for a casual slip of the sleeve, a careless morning after, an accidental movement, to share them with others who might be fascinated, disgusted or even indifferent to their nature.

10 Years Ago Right About This Very Second...

... Oscar night was wrapping up for the films of 2000. The lady whose smile devoured the world was loving her life.


Did you watch on that night? Were you into the Oscars yet? How is that particular race holding up for you.?  It broke down like so among the "Big 8"

  • Picture: Gladiator
  • Director: Steven Soderbergh, Traffic
  • Actress: Julia Roberts, Erin Brockovich
  • Actor: Russell Crowe, Gladiator
  • Supporting Actress: Marcia Gay Harden, Pollock
  • Supporting Actor: Benicio Del Toro, Traffic
  • Original Screenplay: Cameron Crowe, Almost Famous
  • Adapted Screenplay: Stephen Gaghan, Traffic

It was a spread the wealth night. Honestly, I'd forgotten that Almost Famous won Original Screenplay since it missed the Best Picture slot that many expected it to nab. You can blame the Weinsteins and the late entry Chocolat for that, I suppose. The other wins I remembered. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon won 4 Oscars but I still think it got the shaft (among their nominees) and should've taken Best Picture with ease. And I still maintain that Erin Brockovich was the keeper from Soderbergh's double dip.

And remember this? Winona Ryder sure loved musicians back in the day (in more than one way).

Thoughts? Jump back a decade, won't'cha.

Cast This! "Les Miz" For the Big Screen

In the annals of "the movie business is SO weird" and "Hollywood is terrified of musicals" few things beat the case of the 1998 film version of Victor Hugo's French revolution classic Les Miserables. Despite being moved into production during the 90s when the British mega-musical of the same name was well into its record breaking stage run, Hollywood thought it time to revive the book, which had been filmed many times before, but not as an adaptation of the ginormously popular musical.

Hollywood is currently repeating this dunderheaded mistake with umpteen Wizard of Oz projects in development that ARE NOT Wicked the musical, which is so popular that it has been already earned more than half a billion dollars at the box office.

What is wrong with Hollywood?

So back to Les Miz. Admittedly we tend to travel in packs with people who share our interests but I didn't meet one person around the late 1990s who didn't say "Why isn't it the musical?" with a genuinely confused look on their face. Everybody was into that musical. It was as popular as Cats and Phantom of the Opera the two other pop culture musical phenomenons of the 80s. I also didn't meet one person who was eager to buy a ticket the movie without the songs.

So Uma Thurman played Fantine but didn't get to belt out power ballad classic "I Dreamed a Dream", Claire Danes played the pitiable orphaned Cosette but didn't get that wonderful crosscut romantic triangle "A Heart Full of Love",  Liam Neeson played Valjean but didn't get that 11th hour manly weep-a-thon "Bring Him Home". Etcetera.

Fantine (UMA) Dies From Musical Malnourishment

Word is that Tom Hooper may be directing the first film version of this musical as his follow up to The King's Speech. Honestly, if he pulls this off, we'll pretend that this year's Oscars never happened and stop being angry on behalf of David Fincher.
