Sept 23rd - Post Festival Oscar Charts Redux

by Nathaniel R

Once Venice and Telluride and TIFF wrapped it was time to reflect the changes in buzz and hunches to reflect all that new information. Only a few potentially key titles now remain largely unseen by anyone: Vice, Mary Poppins Returns, Mary Queen of Scots, and Wecome to Marwen. If you want to get generous in the technical categories Mortal Engines and Alita: Battle Angel are two risky original would-be blockbusters that remain mysteries as well.

The freshly revamped charts...

INDEX |  PICTURE | DIRECTOR | ACTOR  | ACTRESS | SUPPORTING ACTOR | SUPPORTING ACTRESS | SCREENPLAYS | FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM - we're up to 70 submissions now | VISUALS | SOUNDS | ANIMATED & DOCUMENTARY CATEGORIES

Hope you enjoy the updates.

Joel Edgerton also directed The Gift. Boy Erased is his second feature.

I really think Paul Schrader will be in the best director conversation. The movie is wonderfully written, but its impact surely comes from the style, the direction, the helming with a very strong visual signature.

Adam McKay told someone on Twitter that the trailer for "Vice" would be released tomorrow. We'll see.

Having seen it over the weekend, I am going to guess that JIRGA will be Australia's official Foreign Film submission. There may be an issue with how much the ratio of Pushto language to English in the film is,but I don't really know of any other contenders.

Travis C - a lot of JIRGA is in English though. I had wondered whether it would even qualify, will be interesting to see if it's submitted.

Spike Lee? I get the narrative, but his spot feels to me like it’ll fall to the director of a film that opens later, like Jenkins, Heller, or McKay.

I just saw The Wife. I think it's extraordinary, and not just for Glenn Close's brilliant performance. It certainly should be considered a contender for Adapted Screenplay and Supporting Actor (Jonathan Pryce), among others, hopefully.

How about Claire Denis for Best Director?
If they can nominate Lina Wertmuller way back when, can’t they find room to nominate a celebrated iconoclast now?

I know we're waiting on more critics to see Green Book to confirm the buzz out of TIFF, but it's is a lock in my opinion. It's like The Help and Hidden Figures but with the "your mom will love it"-ness of Philomena. I'd put its chances ahead of all but maybe A Star is Born.

Another thought I've been having: Everyone seems concerned that moviegoers will tune out on Roma on Netflix yet those same people seem to think its Oscar chances are unassailable. I can imagine a number of old school Academy voters feeling underwhelmed by the film. I'm sure it'll still getting in, but I'll believe it as a frontrunner when I see it.

Thank you for all of your hard work Nathaniel.

Just a quick note on your list of countries that have been shut out of foreign film nominations: more than one are European. Portugal, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Serbia: all are in Europe. And Turkey bridges Europe and Asia.

For Best Animated Feature you might want to change a few cause of Ruben Brandt, Collector going to be released by Sony Pictures Classics. For Best Animated Feature you should have your predictions like this:
1. Early Man
2. Incredibles 2
3. Isle of Dogs
4. Mirai
5. Ruben Brandt, Collector

I'm holding out hope that Searching finds some traction along the way for its original screenplay & editing. It has stuck around in that top 10 for quite awhile and word of mouth has been extremely positive.
