Three Little Links

• The Guardian - an excellent profile of Pedro Almodóvar by Xan Brooks
• /Film Daveed Diggs to play Sebastian in the live-action Little Mermaid. But Sebastian is a crab so this is probably not fully live-action but half and half style.
• Vulture - 15 essential Judy Garland performances. Solid list with some strong points made, though I think dead wrong about why Zellweger is awards worthy in Judy (as noted on the podcast I liked her performance quite a bit but what’s missing is exactly what’s cited here as the chief strength, the capturing of Judy’s once in a century kind of talent.

Soundtracking: "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"

by Chris Feil

Where to even begin with “Over the Rainbow”? A song that defined one of the most singular legends of the movies. One of the most significant songs in all of cinema in one of the most enduring films, a song that legend tells was almost removed. A song that turns the specific pain of one character into a universal one across generations and vastly different experiences. There is only one “Over the Rainbow” and one The Wizard of Oz, just as there was only one Judy Garland.

Horror Actressing: Judy In Oz

by Jason Adams

Consider this just a half entry in our "Great Moments in Horror Actressing" canon as I'm somewhat waylaid with New York Film Festival screenings at the moment. But I wanted to mark the release of the "Renee Zellweger as Judy Garland!" bio-pic this week with a quick thought. No The Wizard of Oz is not a horror movie. As far as I can suss out Judy Garland never starred in a proper horror movie. (Feel free to set me straight, as I'm not a Judy expert.) But I don't think we really give her enough credit for how fully she sells Dorothy's many many moments of sheer unadulterated terror in The Wizard of Oz, all the same...

Renee Zellweger Sings as Judy Garland

by Murtada Elfadl

The buzz is building fast and loud for Renee Zellweger's performace as Judy Garland in Judy. All we needed was to check the voice. Will she sing or will she lip sync a la Rami Malek? Well without further ado check it out.

This is not an exacting impersonation per se from Renee but rather an interpretation. It's just a few notes from one song...
