Let the joyous news at last be spread the wicked old wi popular achievement Oscar is dead!

As if the first full four-movie day of TIFF wasn't enjoyable enough (more on those films soon), after the screenings I finally heard the excessively wonderful news that you have surely already been celebrating at home all day: the Academy will not be proceeding with that "popular achievement Oscar" plan this year. This is not to say that the idea is totally dead... we know the board of governors liked it enough to announce it in the first place so it's probably lingering there like a malignant tumor BUT they're not proceeding this year. Perhaps they'll have more time to talk themselves out of it, now? If you missed our three discussions about all the things that were gross and problematic and delusional you can always click back to read and hear them. 

For now let's breath a huge sigh of relief, and pray that there's an even bigger miracle and they quit with that stupid plan to shove the craft categories into commercial breaks.

Intriguing Foreign Film Oscar options from Kosovo, Norway, and more

We're now up to 24 Oscar submissions so we're almost a third of our way to seeing the full list. Here are the new announcements since the last post. (You can see the full submission list, with more details and links to trailers and such, on the updated Oscar charts.) Surprisingly none of the three expected frontrunners (Poland's Cold War,  Mexico's Roma, and Lebanon's Capernaum) have been officially announced as submissions yet. We have long lists for Brazil, Denmark, The Netherlands, and Israel to date but no official pick. We've usually heard about Mexico's longlist by now as well. Hmmm. 

• The Waldheim Waltz -Austria 
  Documentary on a former UN Secretary General's relationship with the Nazis
• The Eighth Commisioner -Croatia 
  A comedy about a politician overseeing an election on a remote island
• A Son of Man  -Ecuador
  Father and son search for inca gold
• Euthanizer - Finland
  A dark morality tale about a mechanic who puts sick pets out of their misery... it's apparently pro-animal and anti-irresponsible pet owners though it sounds horrifying on surface. 
• Namme  - Georgia
  A family drama about the tradition of local healing waters threatened by environmental problems
• The Marriage - Kosovo
  A gay love triangle in which a woman doesn't know her fiance is in love with his best friend
• What Will People Say - Norway
  A Pakistani-Norwegian teenager is kidnapped by her parents and taken to Pakistan (where she has never been) to teach her a lesson. This film was released in the US back in July and we missed it. Argh!
• Buffalo Boys -Singapore
  A 19th century action movie about two brothers avenging their father, a former Sultan
• The Interpreter -Slovakia
  Two old men journey to meet surviving witnesses of a wartime tragedy

We ❤️ Viola

So proud to have been a fan since 2002! Viola Davis gets the cover story in the current Variety as she gears up for her Widows debut at TIFF. Can't wait to see it. But damn, that Best Actress race is getting crowded. (Kris Tapley even suspects Olivia Colman will go lead) 

Early "Destroyer" Reviews. Guess How Good Nicole Is!

We knew ahead of time that Nicole Kidman would be great in Destroyer -- it's kind of her schtick to be brilliant, duh! So it's not a surprise to hear early reviews saying that she delivers and then some. But it IS a surprise and a nice change of pace, post Lion & Big Little Lies, that people are willing to praise her so extravagantly for her uncommon gifts rather than berate her for (take your pick) not being warm enough onscreen / having a frozen forehead / liking "weird" projects / whatever other dumb things people used to hold against her between the Oscar win and Lion (so roughly 2003-2015)... Seriously why must every great actress go through the public hate period?

Anyway. In "we all love Kidman again" mode (nice but obnoxious to those of us who never stopped and didn't fall for the misogyny hamster wheel of public opinion) these are the kind of reviews she's getting...
